Girlfriend want a mini 4 for christmas, it's $400. Looks like the mini 2 is $200. Is the 4 worth twice the price? I know the processor is different, how much better is it? Will she have problems with the 2 running any apps or running the new ios?

If I get her the 2, will she feel like it's slow or a pos or will she never be able to tell it's not the newest/shiniest/more expensive unit?

The 4 is definitely faster and includes the fingerprint scanner.

I have the OG iPad Mini, and it still runs great so I would imagine the 2 would as well.

If she is expecting a 4 and opens a 2, are you in the doghouse? That is the real question.

Mini 2 has the same internals of an iPad Air. Mini 4 has the same as an Air 2, I believe. Mini 2 should be fine for anything she wants to do with it, in all likelihood. Should get iOS updates for at least 2 more years.

Check the chips. 7 is an A7. If 4 has that chip, save the money.

The 4 has the A8 chip.

There is no doghouse, beggars can't be choosers. She wants it for school stuff, so I can't see her pushing the boundaries of any pad.

If you think a mini 2 should provide 2 years with trouble free updates and compatibility, that is plenty in my eyes. In 2 years, there will be something much newer/better/flashier than either of these.

Yes. Should get at least 2 years; the mini 2 is still being sold new in Apple stores.

The mini 4 is slightly thinner; keep that in mind if you're looking at cases as it would require one specifically made for the mini 2.

I haven't messed with the mini 2 very much but can tell you the mini 4 is definitely worth the price: Highest pixel count on any tablet, very fast and great battery life. I'm taking pre med courses and the number of useful apps for iPad now justify buying it IMO if you were on the fence a couple years back

The Mini 4's 7.9-inch Retina screen once again packs a 1536 x 2048 (326ppi) resolution, so movie fans won't notice any difference between the two iPad Minis.

...from a website comparing the two. Looks like the res is the same, glad it's sharp.

Also, the same website was saying that the 4 doesn't have the same battery life as the 2 does. They were getting 10 hours streaming video out of the 2 vs 8.5 hours out of the 4.

I have the mini2. Beautiful picture when watching netflix. I really don't think she would notice the difference between the 4 and the 2.

My Ipad Mini 2 works great.

I almost use it exclusively now.
