How can I move my backup from MacBook to iCloud?

My wife's MacBook'd HDD is completely full. I have located the folder of all of our iOS devices called 'MobileSync' that is the backup of everything from these devices.
I went ahead and paid a few bucks for upgraded iCloud space. My question is, once I switch my back up to iCloud from the computer, can I simply delete this 'MobileSync' folder to save about 70gb of space?

I'm pretty sure you can just delete the contents of the folder, but just to be safe, you can delete them from the iTunes preferences menu under the "Devices" tab
