Can anyone recommend me a good AC ammeter / power consumption monitor? I'm fine with an Amp or kw/h reading.

Basically want something that plugs into wall outlet, and then I can plug any 120V device into it with it reading the current/power draw.

Thanks

Home Depot $18

just take it back once you know how much the device plugged in is using

was it you that posted it?

Do you know how well they work. I would really like to find out what is sucking up my power

No, it was CAD, but I remembered it.

I don't know how well it works, but it seems like it might need some "training". For the price, though, it might be worth getting one just to see how useful it is.

There is another whole home energy monitor called Sense, but personally I would lean toward Neurio because of the open platform.

yea if the "learning" consistes of going and pluging in and slipping all switches so it learns its pattern, im ok with. But im afraid it wont know one set of lights from the other.

Plus im setting up a whole aquarium on a coontroler, so idk how it will tell the difference between all that. I just feel it might be able to see power changes but not pin point it to the Amazon Fire in bedroom vs the 4 others, or the multitude of electronics i have plugged in at my house.

these are the logical next HA step because you add this into an intelligent app/ecosystem and you can take tremendous control of your house over.

why in the world apple or google hasn't put a stake in the ground & nailed this category is beyond me.

i feel like i could grab a few good developers and sort this whole thing out.

you got x10 & zwave plus wink and smartthings paving the way of what is POSSIBLE but they're just not quite 'getting it'.

i can see the vision, why cant they?

its all about digital power fingerprints.

these devices are supposed to 'learn' what device is what (you might have to help it originally with names) based on the distinct power 'noise' each one makes.

whether thats complete bullshite is a different story..but in theory it sounds plausible.

once it knows which fingerprint is what, you suddenly have an incredible amount of insight into what is actually going on in your house and it can tell you when when your HVAC is kicking on or your washing machine is running, etc. even with fridge & other things already running.

eta with LED lights, honestly who gives a damn. they use about 2 cents of electricity a month so plan to manage them with your WINK or whatever hub and let the appliances & stuff talk to the whole-home monitor.

This is my main reason for wanting one. I want to see how much I'm pulling in with my lights, pumps, heaters, etc. Would be nice for other things around the house as well.

That's why I was wanting a receptacle type device as opposed to the whole-home panel devices.

you shouldn't care. those don't use enough power to amount to a hill of beans.

you want it to monitor your 65" tv, cable box, w/d, hvac, fridge, PC, microwave, stove, etc.

i know the main things but once all that is straigtend out i would ike to see where the power is coming from as far as fiance leaving shite on. Even though most of my bulbs are now LED.

almost every bulb in our house is smart in some way now for the same reason.

they never change.

luckily mr. wink schedules everything so at worst, its only on for a short period of time if she turns them on before the schedule fixes it.

she used to drive me nuts leaving the lights on in the living room all night (for safety reasons) so now i just have mr. wink turn that all out at 11:45 and back on at 6am and she never knows the difference.

also turn them off again at 9am and back on at 4:30 and she's quite happy with that. she feels like everything is 'on' when she wants it on now.

eta except when she moves shite around!

i have to go hunt down the lamp with a smart bulb because its in another room or she moved the lamp off the smart outlet to a dumb one.

enough to drive a man to drink. good thing she's cute.

Yeah I'm pretty into them. I had a nice reef setup at my apartment in college, but I lost it all when my apartment caught on fire. Luckily I salvaged all of my live rock though.

Now I have a 90g setup with a handful of fish. Just dropped a candy cane coral into it as the first coral. I'm kind of gun shy going back to reef after losing my last one.

I do have a badass touch screen controller/monitor I made with an Arduino for it though. Once I get it all sorted out ill post some pics. Here's an old one I have from when I was building it.

I'm an EE, so it was more of a fun challenge for me.

It's more for indication than control right now. Just graphs temps and water level. You can't get much more reliable than the tried and true christmas light timer for lighting

May look into automated dosing in the future. But that scares me too.
