re: Help Me Upgrade My Current AV Setup

I always tell people to start with 2.0--most do it the other way and have to back track and then hodge podge the rig.
Think about it this way--you start with a capeable 2 channel rig. When you watch a movie or TV, 90% of what you hear, even in a 5.1 set up, comes from the front L+R. So why not listen to your movies and TV through a great 2 channel system, and then when more money becomes available, add a pre pro and a 3 channel amp and if you desire, the same brand speaker, albeit smaller, as the mains, and voila--you are done!
Instead, most people start with cheap surround sound receiver and try to work around that and end up with a clusterfrick of mismatched amps, pres, DACs, channels, speakers, etc.--and the entire time they are still listening to their nice 2 channel stereo through a crappy surround receiver...THEY ARE DOING IT BACKWARDS.
if you start with a nice 2 channel system, your TV and DVD will sound better through just 2 channels of good amp/pre amp/larger speaker than through a forced 5 channel surround rig--people feel they need all those channels.
I don't even listen in Dolby Digital anymore--I default to 5 channel stereo or 2 channel stereo.
And as of last week, all my video from the Oppo and the Cox cable tuner is running 2 channel as I hijacked the rear speakers (Zu Audio) to hook up to a Marantz vintage that is in another bedroom.. I don't miss a sound from the rears.
I guarantee that I can run a movie or concert video through my big rig using only 2 channel stereo from the Blu-Ray player and knock your socks off.
The surround channels are unnecessary and a product of marketing, for the most part, IMHO.
FWIW...

Marco thanks for the insight last night. I'll keep an eye out on Audio Gon and will make a trip to Metairie to visit Richard and talk Mac gear with him.

He is there on Saturdays or during the week by appointment.

We will agree to disagree. If your main thing is music then I agree 2.0 is the way to go.
If your main thing, like me, is TV and movies, I much prefer 5.1

You left off the last part of my sentence--"for the most part"
The average home has an all in one box or a Best Buy receiver with 5 shitty cube sized speakers and a sub made of particle board. More often than not, these things are set up so poorly, they make TV sound worse than just stereo.
Now, I have heard movies through a few high end 5.1 rigs that were truly set up properly and it was astounding, but this comprises a very small percentage of HT set ups.

And it looks pretty cool in the dark...
For about 5 seconds. Then I'd look for the switch to turn off the backlights permanently or burn about 50 packs of LightDims.

OK so I have been continuing my search and have a few more questions for you Marco.
What do you think of Marantz as a whole and specifically the AV8802a (or 7702 for that matter) pre/pro?
What do you think of Emotiva amps and Marantz amps as compared with the Rotels because I think that's my front runner. I'll save the McIntosh stuff for when I can do it right with a bigger budget.

I like Rotel best of the 3, followed by Emotiva, then Marantz.
I will go deeper into the explanation tomorrow evening as it is 3:15am and I am tired

The room is the key to proper surround sound. A shitty room can be impossible to create a proper sound field in.
I'd throw Adcom amps into the mix with Rotel. The GFA series of amps is solid and well priced. The step up from there and it's a big step would be to Bryston amps. Outstanding quality and warranty comes from Bryston.

Thanks for the suggestion. No doubt Bryston is the next step up along with McIntosh but I'm thinking those will come at a later date. Still have plenty of earning years left to acquire those lines hopefully.

I have an OK system in my media room but you guys are really making me want a really nice 2.0 music system for my formal living room downstairs.

I love Audio Classics. I just sent them one of my 352's today and bought one of their 452's. I also got my C2500 from them last year.

Be sure to match the impedance of your speakers to the impedance of your amplifier.

let me clarify that...
You need to be sure that you have an amplifier that can be stable driving loads that your speaker dips to, as the impedance that a speaker imposes on an amplifier is changing every millisecond. Some speakers have lower impedances in certain frequencies than others.
The nominal impedance of my loudspeakers is 8Ohm, however, I use the 4ohm tap on the amp as the speaker has a wicked impedance curve and it drops to 2.3ohm at around 2200Hz.
