Google's new leader debuted their competitor to Echo & FB Messenger yesterday...

at Google I/O...and there wasn't a single post here about it that I could tell. That's kind of amazing to me to be honest.
The troublesome part I take from this is that while Google's done as much-if not more-with machine learning/AI, voice and image recognition, etc., the fact that delivery dates-or even delivery estimates-weren't provided at I/O means that while they may have this technology in the pipeline, they aren't ready to ship it just yet.
With the admittedly massive amounts of time, money and expertise they've thrown into this, it comes off as if Google is reacting to Amazon's success with Echo as opposed to debuting tech they were always planning to ship.
In other words, Google did not plan for this. They're equipped to compete-and without question they can win-in this game, but they didn't realize it had started until way, way late.

Echo & Messenger have serious disruptive potential for the Mother's Milk of Alphabet's core profit generator: Google Search and Ad revenue. They're way, way ahead of Google here, and they represent an existential threat to the one thing Google's made staggering sums of money off of over the better part of the past two decades.
Google better get these things right. Another Google Wave, Google Hangout, Google+, Google Glass or Google/Nest and things could get interesting.

They're pulling a 90s Microsoft and jumping into whatever anyone else is turning a profit on.

It's hard not to see it that way. But at this point we're talking about Google/FB/Apple/Amazon, in no particular order. They're each fighting a three-front war with each other-simultaneously-to win eyeballs and make $.
Apple's dipped into services whole-heartedly with Apple Music, iCloud, CDN's, original content/Apple TV, iMessage, etc.
Amazon's going after Google via a YouTube derivative, Spotify & Apple Music with Amazon Music, Google & Apple with AWS helping to provide unlimited picture hosting through Amazon Prime Photo, Netflix, Apple and (according to folks here) YouTube with Amazon Prime Video.
Google's going after Amazon with the Google Home, Facebook with the Allo, Apple/iOS with Android, Amazon with YouTube Red and the Allo.
Facebook's shifted a ton of money away from Google via advertising with its ability to push eyeballs to news and online publishing content and FB Messenger & Instagram are threats to G-Mail, iMessage, etc.
Hell Amazon and Bezos is competing with Elon Musk on reusable rocketry. Apple & Google are competing with him for autonomous driving. Google & Apple are fighting with PayPal using their own online wallet services.
It's crazy to think about all of this...but its a great time to be a consumer.

as soon as i know it's compatible with smartthings i'll probably get it. unless the price point is just absurd.

Because I/O seems to be much less glamorous/exciting than it used to be. The new Android version was once the crown jewel of I/O, with awesome new features being rolled out in those releases. Now Android is matured to the point there hasn't been new wow-factor type features in probably 2 or 3 releases. Plus how much of this have we seen previously, often in failed or lukewarm products - social/messaging apps, wearables, another AndroidTV set top box, etc.
Like the article references, it also seems like everything announced is off into the future now. There was once a point where things announced at I/O were available immediately upon announcement.

One of the coolest things from yesterday that I haven't seen anyone mention is Google Instant Apps.

Is FB Messenger a big player?
I honestly know nothing about it. It seems most I know are moving away from anything FB-based, but I'm in my early 30s now.

please explain. Smartphones were niche when the iPhone debuted. No one had a tablet that worked decently or sold worth a damn. The Apple TV was the first media box of its kind.

Seriously? Who shares video this way anymore? Android automatically syncs every video you make on your device with a private YouTube-ish link on gdrive and it's free and unlimited and it takes 2 seconds to click share URL and whoever clicks that link gets the highest quality video their current bandwidth allows.
I can't believe anyone shares hd videos your phone generates via file attachment. Don't current phones even do 4k video now?

Google Play has seen it downloaded one billion times. 10% of global internet phone calls come from FBM as of April 2015.
But hey, since 3 people on the Tech Board don't use it that must mean nobody else does. Amirite?

i dont use facebook anymore but i assume your numbers arent talking about what people use for mms/sms. If people use facebook messenger then i will just plead old age (mid 30s). I just assumed facebook messenger was only used when fricking around on fb and i dont see how your numbers really paint a picture of random fb messaging versus mms/sms usage.
Also just so we're clear FB messenger is the annoying little thing that pops up on your screen that you can move around right and you have to drag to an X to get it to go away?

some of us dont have facebook believe it or not. killed my fb account about 5 years ago when i got remarried because nothing good was going to come from old gfs posting shite on my wall.
fb messenger sounds super lame..are you justifying your numbers because people are on facebook 'messaging' each other which counts as hits?

yeah this was my question as well. Maybe i am oblivious to how popular it is (really dont care to be honest, it's not really that important) but i just dont know anyone who uses it as their go to sms/mms app.

those number directly correlate to people using facebook..i doubt you can 'use' facebook these days and not 'use' fb messaging.
but whatever makes gfunk feel better about his numbers...

I don't use FB either, but I understand messenger is pretty popular.
