Google is now a mobile carrier. Today the company has made official its plan to offer wireless service to owners of its Nexus 6 smartphone. It's called Project Fi, and Google is launching an early invite program beginning today. "Similar to our Nexus hardware program, Project Fi enables us to work in close partnership with leading carriers, hardware makers, and all of you to push the boundaries of what's possible," the company wrote in a blog post. The service is only available for the Nexus 6 and requires a special SIM card for Project FI — it will work with both existing Nexus 6 devices and new ones. Google is says that right now the service is only available as an "early access program," and during that program it won't work on other phones.

For $20 a month you get all the basics (talk, text, Wi-Fi tethering, and international coverage in 120+ countries), and then it's a flat $10 per GB for cellular data while in the U.S. and abroad. 1GB is $10/month, 2GB is $20/month, 3GB is $30/month, and so on. Since it's hard to predict your data usage, you'll get credit for the full value of your unused data. Let's say you go with 3GB for $30 and only use 1.4GB one month. You'll get $16 back, so you only pay for what you use.

Pay only for the data you actually use

How I wish they made a smaller Nexus device for folks who don't want a 6" behemoth. I hope they come out with a smaller Nexus option later this year to go with the larger model.

1GB is $10/month

pricey imo. if this was $5/mo i'd jump in now. i use 3-4GB/mo with most of it due to sreaming music which TMO doesn't count against my cap.

but $30/mo for 1gb/wifi tethering/unlimited talk+text is a pretty compelling sell if you can keep yourself from going over 1GB each month.

but that coverage tho

damn. i'm seriously torn on this. i think i'll see what TMO does to counter this because the coverage is bananas compared to my existing.

also, they need to open this up to nexus4 and 5 owners too.

quote:

If you need a new Nexus 6 to use with Project Fi, you can buy one direct from us when you sign up.

You can select the "Midnight Blue" Nexus 6 in two storage sizes—32GB ($649) and 64GB ($699), plus applicable taxes, with two ways to pay: all at once or over 24 months.

If you choose to pay for your Nexus 6 over 24 months, it is $27.04/month for the 32GB option and $29.12/month for the 64GB option.

There's no interest or fees. However, a credit check is required to be eligible for this pricing.

Having LTE from Dallas to BR is pretty awesome. At least that's what it says from the map

I don't think they are compatible to use the sim

Sounds high, but a 10GB plan with AT&T costs $100 plus $15/gig overage, and they damn sure don't pay you back for not using it all.

Also, I'm more than sure that Google will do everything they can to lower the cost if this takes off.

yeah its pretty high. i'm sure they're trying to discourage initially the torrent crowd who can easily burn through 300GB in a month without blinking an eye..and replacing their comcast at the same time.

google has to balance the ying and yang of GIG infrastructure and project FI without cannibalizing the WiFi.

its a tricky balance..but i think they're making those who would seek to abuse this pay for it. $10/gb keeps this venture from getting overwhelmed before it gets off the ground.

The coverage map should just be T-Mobile plus Sprint overlaid. Next thing they should do is portion off a small slice of their Fiber customers' bandwidth for Project Fi customers to use (I think Comcast does this). Then they need to proceed with a nationwide rollout of Fiber.

i dont get it then because my area (37069 area code) has virtually ZERO coverage.

this map is deep LTE green for not only nashville but all the surrounding areas.

i dont think sprint + tmo = that kind of coverage.

I have a Nexus 6, but I'm currently on the Next plan, or I'd look at trying this.

Well like I hinted at, unless you have a truly unlimited plan, you're probably already paying $10 or more per gig used on another carrier, aren't you? shite, even Net10's 5gig plan is $75, which would be $70 with Project Fi. I know Net10 is technically "unlimited", but let's face it, throttling down to 64k is essentially cut off.

I get 15 for $100. They gave me an extra 5GB free a while back.

i pay $110 which gets me 2.5gb per line for 5 devices with TMO.

add in the fact tmo offers 'music freedom' which is a license to abuse GOOGLE MUSIC and Pandora (set to highest streaming quality) and i typically use 4+GB for month although i manage to stay under 2.5GB for nonsense like youtube & stuff which i try to avoid when on data.

I wonder what the data speeds are like. I have a friend that switched to Sprint because it was cheaper and he gets throttled like a mofo.

The Fi map looks very similar to T-Mobile + Sprint in that area. Whether the coverage maps are accurate is questionable, though.

How much for talk/text? Is it $100 for data only or for your total bill?

my friends with sprint never get anything close to 4G anywhere in this area and that includes downtown nashville. more like 2G even though sprint advertises it differently.

will be interesting to see what happens with google using their infrastructure to supplement TMO.

TMO LTE otoh has always screamed for me its just the coverage blows.
