I'm gonna be upgrading my phone soon and I'm going to have to pay full price for one since I'm on Verizon unlimited and I don't plan on letting go of it.

However, I've had some signal issues lately and may end up switching off of Verizon if the new phone doesn't resolve those issues.

Are there any good unlocked phones that function on both Verizon and Tmobile's networks? I know they use different radios but I'm not sure which to look for when shopping.

No. Verizon is a CDMA network and T-Mobile is GSM. CDMA is a proprietary technology that pretty much locks you into Verizon phones. T-Mobile and AT&T are the two U.S. carriers that use the more open GSM standard.

My iphone 5s from verizon came unlocked and i use a UK sim card in it.

The guy at the store said all iphones at least on verizon should be unlocked and if not they could unlock it for you.

that's interesting, because I was reading that the Nexus 6 will work on both straight from Google. Is that incorrect?

I think most Verizon phones have both CDMA and GSM radios, as well as LTE.

No.
Its phone specific. You need to check and make sure it works on GSM. Any blanket statement to the contrary would be wrong.
