Getting started with smart home

I just bought the amazon echo dot. I set it up to work my pandora and Spotify. I would like to gradually get started doing my fans and lights. Can the dot be the hub or do I need to get the wink 2?

I went with Samsung SmartThings for my hub. Seems to be working well.
