What would be the cause of this?
Installed printer software and it crashed...
Installed update to cell phone back up software and it crashed...
WTF?

real answer: is this downloaded media or are you using a USB stick or CD?

try a different USB port?

yeah sounds like a usb driver issue. is it a desktop computer? ive had that happen as a result of a faulty rail on the PSU before. thats a real bitch to diagnose.

Check the install instructions. HP printer software used to require that the printer be unplugged during the initial software install.
The printer was plugged into the USB port at the tail end of the install.
Don't just plug in something new and let Microsoft install a default driver.
Download the manufacturer's latest driver for the specific item (and operating system) you are installing.
