Why does Comcast Internet service have a 300GB monthly data cap?

When asked that question today, Comcast's vice president of Internet services, Jason Livingood, said that he doesn't know, because setting the monthly data limit is a business decision, not one driven by technical necessity.

"Cable Cares," a parody account on Twitter, asked Livingood, "Serious question, why are Comcast's caps set so low compared to the speeds they're being sold at? 100mbps can hit 300GB in 6hr~."

"No idea—I'm involved on the engineering side to manage the measurement systems but don't weigh in on the business policies," Livingood responded.

Now let's wait for the poli board libertarians come here and somehow try to defend Comcast.

The answer is so that they can charge more, increase profit, and increase shareholder value.

If you don't like it, don't use Comcast. Pretty simple.

What if Comcast has a monopoly in the neighborhood and is the only service people are able to get, which is actually very common around this country?

Pretty sure the whole world knew there wasn't a technical reason.

I pulled the plug on cable at our house and with 1 Netflix account shared by my entire family I start getting those shitty 'you are over your limit' messages on my phone about the 20th of the month.

fricking bullshite. I'm not even running torrents.. This is all from my daughter Instagramming and us streaming movies.

Eta I cringe now when I walk into the den and my 7yo left 'good luck Charlie' running in 1080p all day on the TV.

Thanks Netflix for automatically starting the next episode.

It just goes to show that when a resource becomes too cheap to meter, monopolies will still meter it.

It's their last stand (net neutrality aside) to salvage their shitty cablevision model.

They're in a tight spot.. They know the people using 300+ GB of data a month are likely doing so because they are not using a cable plan and enjoying themselves without helping subsidize qvc and Oprah network.

They hate it. But they also love the money they make from broadband. So this is the perfect solution.... promise HUGE throughout then cripple that with a ridiculously low data cap.

Here in Nashville even on the biggest/most expensive plan you can buy the data cap is still 300gb.

fricking pathetic.

Then move.

Some people put a lot of thought (school district, commute times etc.) about where they buy their house. Not everyone lives in a studio like you and can put their futon in the back of their truck and move on a whim because they didn't like the cable service in the neighborhood.

So I was curious about our usage and logged into our Comcast account to check. Looks like our limit is even lower at 250GB, but it also says that enforcement of the "data consumption threshold" is suspended at the moment.

I'm about to be a Comcast cord cutter.

105mbps. 2 Gbox's. 1 Roku.

What's your setup so I can gauge if I'll hit the 250/300GB cap

We have the following devices hooked up to the internet:

1 Apple TV
1 Chromecast
1 Fire Stick
2 iPads
3 Laptops
2 Smartphones

Wife and I spend 3-4 hours on the internet every day using a combination of the devices mentioned above. We stream about 1-2 hours of Netflix on average per day. I don't know load anything off the internet, except SW updates for the phones, tablets and the computers.

I need to look up my data.

We go over. Every. Single. Month.

4 kids.. 2 adults and way too many smart devices to count. I wish I had metering like Android where I knew what was eating that up.

I'm positive it's Netflix. Never thought I'd see the day where I wished they would provide an option for LOWER quality. My kids don't need to stream Maya the Bee in 1080p.
