Just bought this new AC1200 and want to turn off the wifi on my combo I'm renting from Cox but I want to make sure I'm not going to make any problems for myself. I have my Plex server (dedicated Ubuntu 14.04 box) hardwired to my modem, will this cause any problems for my clients connected via wifi through the AC1200?

Also, does anyone know why I can't turn off wireless in the combo? I read something about the ISP needing to do it...?

Have you tried..? Sometimes it is as easy as getting into it and turning off wi-fi...

Well, yeah lol. The option is grayed out. I've tried doing it fresh off a reboot and the option is never available to me.

Call them and get them to do it then...

No reason you should be forced to use their wi-fi

That's what I was thinking, so I called and got transferred to the "Wifi department." I told the lady 4 times what I wanted to do before she told me to swap the combo to a different channel to reduce interference and I hung up on her. If it comes to THAT option again I'll just go trade it in for a straight up modem lol.

You're infinitely better off buying your own modem. It pays for itself within a year or so.

I'll have to do that.

Now anyone have any input on having the server hardwired to the modem and not connected to the wifi?

You would have a Cat5 to the router, not the modem. That will provide the fastest, most reliable connection.
