I got a new laptop at work a few weeks ago. I've slowly got it to resemble my old one in terms of how things run, software installed etc.

I've installed the newest version of Chrome for my browser but this sumbitch eats up memory like crazy. I just opened up Task Manager and it shows 8 instances of chrome.exe*32 running. And they range from taking up 132,000k down to the lowest being 57,000k.

I have 6 tabs open but it shows 8 instances of chrome? Can someone give me any advise on how to speed this back up? My old POS laptop ran chrome a lot better than this.

Chrome uses a lot of memory on purpose.

Chrome starts a new process for each tab so that one misbehaving tab/site doesn't take down the entire browser.

One for each tab, plus one for the main browser process, plus possibly another for some extension (flash or whatever).

Chrome's memory use probably isn't what's slowing it down.

Open Chrome's built in task manager (Shift-Esc) and see if any process is doing anything silly (using a lot of CPU, steadily climbing memory use).

Thanks for the info. I'm just perplexed because Chrome on my other laptop ran like a champ. This one is dragging.

Chrome runs like shite for me on Droppings. Don't know if it's browser specific issue or not. But it drags really bad.

It performs the absolute worst on TD. Maybe I need to look into a new browser.

It doesn't really drag for me, but it definitely does use more CPU than other tabs. Chrome's task manager shows my active TD tab using a steady 15-20% CPU. If I have several TD tabs open, whichever one is active will eat that much CPU constantly. If I switch to another non-TD tab, the CPU spikes temporarily then drops to near 0.
