windows 7
it's on its' 3rd reboot [ from me,power button off n reboot and it auto returns to CHKDSK even tho I interrupted boot, to bring up desktop, but couldn't get a browser to load. explorer or firefox ]
stage 4 of 5
1463 files of 246256 files processed. numbers processed just stopped, no indication of any hdd activity either
during the first CHKDSK it did repair 3 different files, a prefetch and 2 mozillas
thoughts on why it's hanging up?!

i am currently going through the same with a drive. I imaged the drive and had the chkdsk run on the image and it was accessible again, but for some reason, files inside of folders were no longer there.
I have spinrite running on the original and it has been running for 3 weeks now and stuck on the same sectors. Basically bad sectors on the drive.
I did see a thread post online about manually deleting a certain set of windows files and then restarting with a system disk and letting it rewrite those files again to recover the drive.
One place also mentioned something about it needing to go through 3 reboots and scans to work sometimes.

3 WEEKS !!!!!
spinrite? from GRC.com?
thx for responding
I just checked, at least I got the hdd lit once a sec
so something is going on.
I wanna go ssd.....might have to substitue other than imaging to get it done.
anyways, it boots a bit faster that b4....I woke up to a plain black screen...had to power off
had a few anomalies over the last few weeks, so I'm not too surprised

Do you have another machine you can plug it into via caddy or something?
I have another program that was able to mount the drive and scan it to make the image.
Test disk can also help to recover partitions as well.

chkdsk is primarily for checking filesystem errors. Go to the HDD manufacturer's site and download their utility for checking the disk itself to make sure the hard drive is not bad.

sorry
Basically a device you plug the drive into so that you can plug it into another machine.
Test Disk
But yea if you could figure out the health of the drive that would help too i imagine.
