First I couldn't get the door open but the light was blinking and I could hear it trying to open. Finally used a paper clip to get it open and put in a cd. It doesn't recognize the fact that the cd is in the drive. Checked the device manager and drivers are up to date and it says the device is working properly.
Can anyone give me some ideas on what to do next?

Just replace the drive. Shouldn't be too difficult.

If the laptop is still under warranty, get the drive replaced. If it's not, the quickest solution is to just buy an external drive.
