Car Audio

I have a 1998 Toyota land cruiser. There's a CD player and cassette player. The speakers just sound awful now. Guy at best buy said I have 6.5 inch speakers.
Question I have is what is the best way to upgrade here? I want to play music from my iPhone and want it to sound awesome. Any recs on best speakers to get that aren't outrageously expensive?
TIA

Crutchfield can help you with every single one of those issues.
With car audio speakers, you get what you pay for. You'll probably have to get a new headunit (~100-150) plus anywhere from 2-4 speakers.

If you want quality sound, you'll have to start by upgrading the head unit. If you don't want a lot of power and very high quality sound, that should be plenty for the power side.
From there, a decent set of components up front, a cheap pair of rears for fill, and a sub and amp.
Depending on how much you want to spend, and how high a quality you're looking for, the options can range.
For 6.5" components, about $100-150. Rears, $60-ish. HU can be anywhere from $150-1000. Sub and amp (and box, and wiring kit, etc.) can get expensive. But a good setup shouldn't be more than $150 for sub and $150-200 for amp.
For brands, I like Alpine and Polk. Pioneer, Kicker, Rockford Fosgate are decent as well.

How much do you want to spend?
Just your basic upgrade would be a new head unit and four coaxial door speakers. You could get away spending $350 and it would sound decent. You can also throw a small sub and amp in there if you want. Budget system that will sound good would probably cost $500 with all of that plus the wiring.
If we knew how much you wanted to spend, it would be easier to advise you.
Shop at sonic electronix, not Crutchfield
