Can't get screen mirroring to work on my Galaxy Note 3

I had a Samsung Infuse before I upgraded to the Galaxy Note 3. The infuse had an MHL connector to connect to the HDMI port on a TV. That worked great.
When I bought my note, all the literature says it will work I could NEVER get it to work. There was a q code I checked in Best Buy and it said my phone doesn't have MHL technology. The phone literature says it does. The Samsung rep in the Best Buy store was basically an idiot and didn't know anything. She called Samsung help line and they basically told me I needed "the white cable." So I bought "the white cable" by Samsung and it still doesn't work.
