It's Iron Bowl game day and you are thinking about a camera.

If you're shooting video, might go with the t3i. I believe it has an articulated Live View screen.
If you want something a little better build with weather sealing, look at the Pentax K-50. It also comes in some cool colors.

Not much of a difference between the two. Just gotta pick which works you wanna go with
Check out the the DigitalRev channel on YouTube. They review the cameras in a way anyone can understand

I like my T3I, it's solid.
It does take good video, the only problem is the video files are huge, so for 90% of video i.e. baby doing stuff, I just use my iphone.

I've had multiple experiences with Nikon and have had headache after headache. I'll go Canon next time without a doubt.

with DSLR's its best to find which you feel comfortable with. have your wife (unless it's a surprise) to hold both and see which fits her hands better. Once you start getting into it, and buying lenses and such, (which can get expensive) it's better to stay with one side instead of switching.
with that being said, I've had a Nikon since 2007. I've taken a lot of pictures over the course of this time (like over 20k) and I've never had an issue. I've since upgraded the body, but still use the same lenses I bought with the first one.

thanks for the input everyone, i went with the Nikon, it seemed to be a little smaller, and with the wife having small hands, i assumed it would be a better fit. thanks again tech board
