Son is wanting headphones for his birthday. One of his friends has a pair of these Sony headphones, and Best Buy has them on sale for $99. Any other options I should look at?

He's a sweathog, and into teamsports. Won't use them in workouts. Looking for over the ear headphones only.

Does he care about brand name? Most kids can't really tell the difference in sound quality; they only care about how it looks compared to their friends.

If he doesn't care, there are a lot of good ones online for ~30-50$.

But $99 for a brand name like Sony is actually decent price for over ears.

No doubt about the cheaper options, but this kid has learned to be price conscious relative to value, and takes care of his stuff. I don't mind spending $100 - $150 to reinforce his concept of the value of the dollar.

Any specific suggestions?

Tzumi ear buds. Can usually find them at Tjmaxx or marshals for ~17 bucks. Can also snag them off eBay or Amazon. They sound decent, get loud, but the battery life is in the 2 hour range as opposed to the box's advertised 6 or 7 hour. That's why I own like 6 pairs (humble brag).

Archeer AH07

AH07: Good midtones quality, actual metal on design/robust, micro-usb charger.

Bohm

Bohm: Recently bought a pair of these. GREAT sound quality and very sturdy. Battery life lasts for a long time too. Noise cancellation is also included, which is neat. Fit is pretty tight as it's not folding like most bluetooth, but secure nonetheless. The look is an acquired taste imo though.

P26 iJoy

A cheaper pair. Built very light but good range sound with built-in equalizer on headphones so you can adjust sound accordingly. Also micro-usb charging which is good.

Here are a few suggestions. I tried to include three different price ranges so you can see how each differs from each other. It really does come out to you get what you pay for.

$20 range will be made of plastic. I own a few and they are great for anything I do, but I have had bad run-ins with durability so it's a hit-or-miss with these.

$50 range will usually have plastic/metal components, you'll also notice a big upgrade in sound.

$80-100+ You shouldn't pay anymore than this, unless you are shopping for an audiophile or music prodigy. Durable without question, always sounds great for any type of music.

But I really suggest you just take a look around with this in mind, since you will probably have a better idea of what style your son likes as far as looks go.

Another note: What SONY bluetooth headphones did you find for $99? Because that is a great price for sony headphones. Do you mind sending a link?

^ Thanks for those suggestions. I'll look into them. The link in the OP was for different pair of Sony over the ear headphones (650 vs 950). The link below is for the pair that is on sale at Best Buy. I'm not looking for a pair that is heavy on the bass as this one, but they might just work for a 12 year old.

I see, thanks for the link. I'm not into bass THAT much either. That pair does seem a little pricey.

Good luck with your search though.
