Best wifi Router for vertical range

Can only one be hooked up via Ethernet? Also how would it work with Apple TV if I have to be logged in from a google acct to use a device?

The only way to know for sure if you can get by with one router is to try it, but I wouldn't count on it being very reliable.


I'm not sure if antenna orientation changes the signal in the vertical/horizontal direction very much, but just the fact that you're going through floors in addition to walls is going to weaken the signal. Wood itself doesn't block much signal, but the moisture in the wood can cause problems. If there is a bathroom between the router and Apple TV, you're going to have headaches.

Long story short, you'll probably be happier going with the Google Wifi or something similar.

Buy router with the best horizontal range.

Rotate router 90 degrees about a horizontal axis.

Though the Google Wifi mesh system is an easy to use product, it does not perform as well as most other mesh systems.

OP, are you just wanting wifi coverage, or are you looking for the best wifi speeds? If "best of the best" speeds aren't a concern, then the Google Wifi mesh should 100% handle your scenario. If you do want better speeds, look at the Netgear Orbi and Linksys Velop mesh systems. Better coverage, better speeds than the Google Wifi.

Oh yeah, mesh systems are a tad pricey, so be prepared to open up your wallet.

I wasn't going to mention it, but since you said you might give it a try, I have the Linksys Velop mesh system (with 3 nodes). It is pricey, so keep an eye out on CamelCamelCamel and try to get it on sale (Black Friday around the corner, might be cheap on Amazon).

I am pretty happy with the mesh. 100% coverage through 2900 sqft (2 floors). My gigabit connection, paired with the Velop, allows me to stream Netflix, SlingTv, WatchEspn, etc all at the same time without any hiccups. Using the Velop in "bridge mode" (no DHCP, just wireless access for the ATT router) results in faster speeds than using the Velop as the router (which is needed to have access to all of the extra features that Velop provides). I'm considering going back to bridge-mode, but not ready to give up yet; I'd like to think there is something I can do to get my speeds back up to where they were.

I think I got the 3 node setup for about $320. Would I buy it again? In a heartbeat. I dabble in smarthome technolgies, and it is nice that each node has a Zigbee transmitter built into it, thus expanding the Zigbee mesh. The cost is the pill that is tough to swallow; if you can get past that, then the Velop is awesome.

Your current modem should be plenty fast. The key is does it have a gigabit ethernet port, which it looks like it does. IMO, start with getting the Velop, run tests, if you find the results are subpar, update the modem. If the modem makes no difference, return it.

The Velop system is very good. I would recommend it to anyone with concerns about Wi-Fi coverage in their home.

If you can, skip the expensive wireless router or mesh system and go Ubiquiti APs. Yeah, you have to run cat5 and use a POE switch, but you won't regret it. With MU-MIMO now used by more and more things, these routers don't last nor can they handle the load and range at the same time, especially with an up down multiple floors situation. Best part of APs is the same SSID with a seamless transition wherever you are in your structure. And the speed is always fast and not bogged down. Your cell phone using WIFI calling will be instantly better too.
