Best way to completely clean MacBook pro

Long story short I have a 2010 MacBook Pro that I used for college. It has a ton of stuff on it that I don't need immediate access to or could clear completely. Seems to run slow and I can't even run GIFS or Premiere Pro with out it skipping at points.
What's the best way to clean it up and get it back to the original settings? I don't mind buying an external hard drive if necessary.

Do you have the ram maxed out?
I guess you could run the disk permission fix stuff and disk repair on the Disk Utility.
Use Grand Perspective to find files you may not have known were on there (scan the whole drive) and free up space.
If its still slow id look into getting a solid state drive for it. The solid state i have in my 09 macbook makes it quite usable.

It's funny that you have a Mac, but don't know how to do basic stuff like resetting it back to factory conditions.

I would think that people buying a $200 pc, aren't really worried about wiping/reinstalling...Someone that buys a 1500$ PC though, may have a little more knowledge
