Best Storage Solution for Videos on Laptop

I have the TiVo stream where I can download video files directly from my TiVo to my MBA or PC Desktop. I like to watch movies or football games on the MBA when I have a long cap trip or place rides. What is the best storage solution for this?
Do I need to get a large external SSD to store the video files on?
Is there anything that would speed up Download time off of the box?
