best external monitors for macbook pro

Does anyone have a secondary monitor hooked up to their macbook pro? Do you see any difference between connecting using hdmi or the thunderbolt cable?
I have a 32" tv that I am currently using connected with hdmi and it seems to lag a little, so I want to make sure it is just because it is a cheap tv and not because of the hdmi connection.
I'm looking to pick up a nice QHD or 4k monitor while the christmas deals are going on really just need to know if i need to get one that is compatible with the thunderbolt cable?

get any 24" BenQ or ASUS with 1 ms response time and you should be good. Youll just need an HDMI to thunderbolt cable
