I'm looking for thoughts about Apple Pay. It seems like a good idea. Does it work well? At most places? How does it work at a restaurant for example?

I've used it a couple times

Hard to tell which machines will take it and which won't

I don't find it any quicker than whipping out my credit card

I used it the first few times at places that I knew accepted it. I don't really use it anymore cause it takes about the same amount of time just to swipe my card.

October 2015 is the mandate for the credit cards with chips in them, and supposedly how it works in Europe is they bring a swiper to the table (new swipers would likely also have NFC and take Apple Pay if the merchant does). Not sure if that is how it will work in the States or not because we are going Chip and Sign rather than Chip and PIN like they do in Europe.

The real benefit is the security because it doesn't use your actual credit card number. But I haven't even set it up because the convenience factor isn't there. Maybe in a few years when you can use it anywhere and tap to pay with your smart watch.

I like it and google wallet. Use it whenever I can, it doesn't save too much time because of all the questions the terminal will ask you anyway though.

I kinda wish someone else would of gotten the looppay technology than Samsung though, that looks interesting, but I don't really want a Samsung device.

I've used it at Winn-Dixie on several occasions, the Disney Store and Whole Foods. Winn-Dixie always still requires a PIN as my primary card on Apple Pay is my debit card....but I don't recall ever having to input the PIN at the Disney Store or Whole Foods.

It's convenient if I already have my phone in my hand at the register. If it's available to be used, I typically use it.

I used it at Winn-Dixie today for this reason. There are also times when I'll walk out of the house without my wallet but I never forget my phone so in those cases it's useful but it's really no faster than just using a credit card.

Thanks for all the responses. I will probably try it with my debit card. I don't keep much money in that account so it will be a good choice for baby steps.

Depends on if they ring it as a debit or credit depending on the cashier and such. Sometimes they make you sign with credit, sometimes not.

I always end up at stores that ask 50 billion questions on their checkout devices it seems like when I use it.

I know you're being sarcastic, but in order to use Apple Pay you have to first buy an expensive device from a particular manufacturer. A device that is used for many other functions, and one that many people would prefer to use a different device for those other functions. That is a huge drawback to a payment service/method.

Someone else can clarify if I'm way off but I think that when you use Apple Pay the merchant gets a random one time use card number and not your actual card number. So when there's a breach your card number is safe.

Apple Pay is a brand, not a standard. The important part is NFC + Biometric Authentication + Visa Tokenization.

I think we're up to around 67% Smart Phone penetration. The Galaxy S6 is supposed to have a decent finger print reader on it now. It may take another generation, but the digital wallet will mainstream soon, regardless of what brand of digital wallet you use.

I know how NFC payments work, but I thought we were talking about the pros/cons of Apple Pay?

I agree that digital wallets will be mainstream soon. But again, this thread is about Apple Pay, and it being tied to devices made by a particular manufacturer is a drawback.

So if a thread on Google Wallet came you'd make the same comments, because compared to a piece of plastic, even the cheapest smart phones are cost prohibitive. Most days it's like they didn't even move this board from the OT

It's not any drawback to millions and millions of iPhone users.

iPhone users should worry about non iPhone users being unable to use Apple Pay?

How is this a drawback?

Like you said, we all have smartphones anyway, and Google does everything in their power to make Wallet work on as many of them as possible. I was only saying that, for me at least (and apparently for others, too), using a service that is tied to a particular manufacturer's hardware is far from ideal. This is, and for as long as I can remember has been, my problem with Apple.

No, just that if an iPhone user wants to use Apple Pay with, say, a smart watch, or whatever other payment devices come out in the future, they will have to buy from Apple. I just like to avoid putting myself in that type of situation.

The term "vendor lock-in" is only used positively on one side of a transaction, and customers are on the other side.
