Decided I was going to go down the SCCM route. Passed my 70-243, so I guess now I have an MCTS in Administering and Deploying ConfigMgr 2012.
Next up: Server 2012 MCSA as a precursor to the private cloud MCSE

How common is it for employers to pay for and send people to the classes and tests?

Everywhere I've worked would at least pay for the first attempt but I guess it depends on the workplace. Can't hurt to ask though.

Idk, I have no experience there. But they might if it's something they need to have someone be competent in.
