I want to get all my files from a my old PC and an external hard drive.

I glanced on Craigslist but didn't see anybody in the BR/DS area.

Plug external hard drive into new computer and access files.

If it's just files and not programs, the easiest thing would be to either put the old PC hard drive as a secondary drive in the new computer, or get an external hard drive case or dock to plug it into (typically $10-$30) and copy the files to the new computer.

Just pull the drive and plug it into the new computer. Problem solved.

If you actually have corrupt data or a drive failure, restore from your backup. Again, problem solved.

If you don't have a backup, you will need to decide just how important those files are because data recovery from a broken drive ain't cheap.

The external drive only has the USB cable and no power cord.
The old PC is just a tower.

You could put the hard drive into an external (USB) hard drive enclosure. If the main computer can't read it, you can use a free program called Recuva to access the data and copy it all to a folder on the new computer. Then you can go to the command prompt to move all the photos to their own folder using wildcards (ie *jpg and *gif). Same for documents (*doc). A duplicate cleaner can erase all the unneeded duplicate files.

Only downside to that method is some programs won't work anymore because they depend on certain files being in the right place.

So unplug the drive from the old machine and plug it into the new one. It's similar to changing socks, and about as complicated.

If your drive is so old that it uses the old PCI cable instead of SATA you'll need an adapter card, which is not very expensive. About $20 or so.

Maybe I should give more details.

Here's my old external drive that doesn't come on at all. There's no power cord for it and the USB cord doesn't charge it, and my laptop doesn't recognize it.

And here's my old PC that doesn't plug into to 'anything' I don't have a monitor for it. I don't have a 'new' PC to plug it up to.

I need all my music and pictures off both of them, and put on either DVD or a cloud server.

Do you know what a hard drive is and what it looks like?

Disassemble both and pull the actual hard drives out of the cases. Once you do that post pics and we can help you from there.

Pull both harddrives from computer and external casing.

Buy a external hardrive dock or similar product that is linked.

If the drive doesn't come on at all that's actually a good sign because it is likely a problem with the drive enclosure and not with the drive inside. The drive enclosure just transmits data, so if it breaks your data is probably still good. But if the external drive powered on and rattled on a bit, indicating the drive was powered but not retrieving data, I'd be more concerned.

Unless the drive itself is bad this is the IT equivalent of changing out a car's alternator. No disrespect intended since I can't change a real alternator myself, but your best option might be to pay no more than $150 to Geek Squad for this. What they will likely do is break open the external drive to find the internal drive that is hidden inside. Then they'll hook it up to a desktop-like rig and copy the files off. The only likely complication is that your external drive is old enough that it might use PCA connections instead of SATA, but Geek Squad should be able to deal with this. Your external drive will be ruined but it was broken anyway.

That said - if your hard drive actually is corrupted and you don't have a backup, it will cost you a pretty penny to get the data off a bad drive. Backing up is easier.

So I'm assuming that docking station plugs into my laptop?
