Android user here switched to iPhone: How the frick do you select text on iOS?

I try to select text on the far left of a web page and iOS won't let me drag the bar and usually tries to to send the back command for web browsing.

Trying to select simple lines makes me select an entire paragraph.

Can any iPhone user on here please give some tips without jail breaking my phone?
