Right now I use Air Video HD on iOS. Basically there's a Mac or Windows server app and I tell it which folders to make available on the iOS app and I can stream or download videos in those folders. I have an unlimited data plan so most of the time streaming with Plex is fine but I don't want to pay for Plex Pass for those times that I want to store the content locally. Is there an app available on Android that will allow me to duplicate the functionality of Air Video HD? I have noticed a few apps the use the old Air Video server but not the new HD server so those won't work.

if you install google photos and point it to where your videos are, it will upload to a private 'youtube-like' share on the cloud where you can generate a link for anyone to view it.

hd.

free.

I'll give it a shot. I have around 3.5TB of files so I'm not sure how well it'll work with that much data. Is there a size limit for the files? Some of the movies are 5-10GB or larger.

i dont think so..its sucked up every video I have and no complaints so far. its a much better way to share.

i think you install a tiny little google doo-dad that wants you to point to the directory(ies) you want synced and it may take a couple days to complete initially but after that you're good.

I used UPnPlay. Set up a DLNA server on your computer.

problem with all those solutions is you have to keep your computer up and running and accessible on the web and it chews up bandwidth and resources on your local network and router.

with google photos, you upload pretty much an identical copy served from youtube-esque tech so a single private link can be shared with anyone, anywhere, and it will always play and degrade greacefully if the end user's bandwidth is limited.

Cool thanks for the suggestion. I have it syncing my download folder and external hard drive. It found almost 17K files so it'll take awhile but I'll test it out once it's done. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.

you're going to love google photos. probably the best thing on android and criminally under the radar.

its brainlessly easy to use and it will probably create a few 'magic' movies from your stuff that is always entertaining.

Huh? You don't need to pay for plex pass. You may need to buy the plex app once but not reaccuring payment is required to use plex. You can create multiple folder on your plex media server on your computer. I use to pay for plex pass because I thought I needed it but found out I didn't.

I guess I just don't follow what you're saying. I have thousands of local video on plex that I even share with friends outside my area. Local storing is no issue either. I keep them on hard drives on my pc.

I've actually watched my plex media files via my wifi router locally when my internet was not even on and I wasn't using data. Not sure how that worked but it did.

Oh okay I see. Yes you need your computer up and running. But I've done local steaming with no internet on my wifi network even without Internet.

Why about just getting an external hard drive and attach to the device or tv?

They also have a device that if this isn't supported it makes it. You just attach your hard drive to it then the device to your tv. Something like this

My computer is on most of the time so accessing the content isn't an issue. I was looking for an app on Android that would let me download videos directly to the phone. From what I've seen syncing content for offline use with Plex requires Plex Pass. On iOS Air Video HD syncs with specific folders on my computer and external hard drive. From there I can either stream the content or download it to my phone for offline use.
