The final between Japan and the U.S. at the Women’s World Cup on Sunday was the most-watched soccer event in American television history. Drawing 25.4 million viewers, it beat out the NBA Finals—with 13.9 million—or the Stanley Cup—with 7.6 million. The program broke the record from the U.S.-Portugal match during the 2014 World Cup, which drew 18.2 million.
Boom!

Wow. I could tell from the turnout at the bars that the ratings would be good but I didn't realize it would be this good. That said, I thought the US-Belgium game had around 25 million viewers.

Yeah, maybe.
Either way, the "soccer will never catch on in the U.S. people " will be changing their tune very soon.

That may be including Univision. Or maybe the Portugal game with the Univision numbers.

This is said after every World Cup and the numbers haven't drastically changed. People watch because it's a once every 4 year event (like the Olympics) and America was in the finals.

I would say something has changed. More and more games are being shown on TV. Drastic change? Maybe not, but the rating have been increasing.

Even the number of people watching once every 4 years has increased. It actually happened last year as well (mens). MLS and Premier League have gotten unprecedented numbers of viewers over the past 8 years. Granted, it mostly wasn't available, but nonetheless...the fact that networks are showing these leagues suggests that they see the market value of a growing sport.

I don't think the men got to play at 7 PM ET on Sunday.

I totally agree with this, but those men's numbers seem a tad low to me. Maybe I'm just super optimistic.

I don't think those numbers take into account the people at watch parties in public places and bars.
I would bet that more people watched the WWC final at home than they did the USMNT's WC games.

For soccer viewership in general? Absolutely, they have.
The EPL American contract is raking in the cash.

I met a guy who played Basketball at Tennessee during the Candace Parker era, he mentioned that while he was a student, the Lady Vols players were more well known around campus than the men even with them making respectable runs in the tourney.

I don't believe that. We're talking about during the Pearl era after all. Outside of Candace Parker (and probably including her), I very much doubt the players were known as much as Lofton, Smith x3, et all.

I really want to see the ratings for a men's final.

And the MLS will still have no clue on how to take advantage of it

I'm surprised. I obviously watched all of the women's games, but I get way more excited about the men. I'm always completely unproductive all day, and the group stage wins are more fun than watching the women win the whole thing.

Do you have a solution though? As someone who loves the international game and European club soccer, I'm just not sure what the MLS can do to get me involved. It's not their fault it doesn't feel as big. It simply isn't.
