I wish I had seen this thread sooner. Could have dropped a Harry Kane on the first page.

SetTheMood is lost in space/time, I think he's posting from 2004.

Gerrard wasn't one of the top five players in the world in 2004 either.

Gerrard has always been an above average player for the EPL. I wouldn't say he was any better than Lampard, Joe Cole, Scholes, or Vieira.

A case could definitely have been made for him.

Over who? 2005 and onwards Gerrard was excellent, though for me he was never top five for me. In 2004, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Henry, Shevchenko, Maldini, Nesta, and a host of others were still in their prime. I just don't see the argument.

Joe Cole shouldn't ever be in the conversation. And Vieira was a better midfielder than Lampard and Scholes, though Lampard was the better goalscorer and Scholes the better passer. Vieira had it all.

It gets pretty hairy after the top 2.

To me honestly Hazard is a clear 3....closer to 2 than 4 IMO.

He is a guy anyone in the world could use and build a team around.

scholes was also a better goal scorer.

so he was better passer and better and goalscoring. not the best tackler.

scholes wins.

I apologize. A case could have been made in 2005 not 2004.

No he isn't. Statistically the other two are way way way way way ahead of everyone. Hazard's return is paltry in comparison. He's a pretty brilliant winger but he's not a clear cut number 3.

Vieria was the better tackler, could cover more ground with a massive engine. As a deep-lying midfielder I would take Vieira over Scholes, though as a pair they would work perfectly. They were both red card machines though.
