A couple days after a Russian fan shoots off a flare gun during a match, Croat fans throw flares on the pitch... 1 of which explodes in a stadium worker's hand

how did the flares get in the stadium? That can't be allowed

ETA: at this point... if I'm a local official... I wouldn't want to host an Eastern Euro country

That's what I don't understand. How do flares get in, it could just as easily be a pipe bomb

Sounding like bag checks are lax if Craig Burley is to be believed. They are suggesting just ban all bags period. I know MLS just implemented super strict bag policies that more or less eliminated backpacks and the like from stadiums.

Can someone explain this to me?
Why would the fans not support their team?

I've been through the post 9/11 NFL stadium entrance check a million times... fairly certain something like what happened here couldn't happen at a NFL game

Crazy that flare went off in the dudes face, even the players pleading to the fans. Shame really

for Croatia... it's clearly something civil that needs to be fixed in house... just how?

but the security at these Euro stadiums must be ramped up

For teams under suspension or investigation, their games should have no fans allowed. Its pretty easy to control it then.

Turkey's about to play... they're under investigation

should Spain be punished? should their fans not be allowed in?

How do you determine the fans allegiance?

I'm talking in the moment like this tournament. If the tournament hasn't started then kick the team out.

It wouldn't be difficult at all to implement an NFL-style bag policy where only clear bags under a certain size are allowed in. It's amazing that everywhere you go in France there are heavily armed guards all over the place, and yet they can't even keep flares out of stadiums and prevent fans from rioting.

I don't think you should punish all the fans for what a few idiots do, up the security for fans in certain sections. implement a no bag policy. any and all flags banners, what not must be checked in and approved/ searched 24hrs in advance and received upon entry 1hr prior to kickoff.

The problem is these weirdo that shove the flares up their bungholes or vaginas. hard to stop that but you cant stop stupid

I had no idea that was a problem. I guess they could install TSA style x-ray machines and do random checks on people, but I have no idea how expensive that is or whether it would be effective. It also probably couldn't happen before this tournament ends, but maybe for the 2018 World Cup.

An easier/cheaper solution might be to have dogs that can sniff out explosives if they don't have them already.

Kept thinking when I was watching flares hit the field, "That could have been a gun."
