So is MLS sort of a feeder league to the EPL? I know the big names get crazy money thrown at them. Does the MLS have the coin to throw a bigger name players?

I guess what I'm asking is it the goal of an MLS player to get to one of the big euro leagues in order to get paid.

It's not necessarily a feeder league to Europe, but some guys have done well in MLS and been offered by European clubs. And I know the money is better in the top Euro leagues, but I'm not sure about the less popular leagues. I think for a lot of these guys that can't make EPL, La Liga, Serie A or Bund, they would rather stay in America closer to home, family, friends, etc.....

Serie A.. empty stadiums with no atmosphere just make it hard to watch

Yeah, I have seen this a couple of times and found it very odd. What is the reason for the empty stadiums? What is going on?

Stadiums are just too big

Even Juve went to a smaller stadium

Italian fans usually pack the house to European games and derbies thats about it. The avg fan might not want to deal with the negative aspect the Ultra scene has created.

Fairly low attendance, but stadiums or sections are intentionally empty to punish the ultras and other trouble making fans.

For example, if Mexico's puto chant got them in trouble, then FIFA could force them to play their home games in empty stadiums.

Also, Serie A is awesome. Most underrated league on this board. I love watching their games. Just hard to find, and I don't know Italian.

The attendance isn't great in Serie A the last few years but it's not all that far behind England or Spain (actually think it's practically equal to Spain).

It's a bit more than just the emptied sections you mention (though that happens a lot and solves nothing). You don't see the crowds for some of the bigger clubs on TV due to the huge old all-purpose stadiums where the last of 75,000 seats to fill would be the low sideline ones that are more expensive with crappy views.

Ok, I figured he was talking more about the occasional empty game forced by the Italian FA. Italy and Serie A (outside of Pirlo and Balotelli) gets a shite reputation on here for no reason.

It really does. I guess I should just be happy that at least Pirlo gets a bit of credit now.

The harshest wave of invective posts I've ever received on this, or any, board was for suggesting that Pirlo was as good as Xavi when I first started posting here.

I vaguely remember that. I feel like the majority of the national team is wildly underrated on here. Candreva, de Rossi, Abate, el Sharawaay, and Montolivo are some of my other favorite Italian players. I was disappointing when Montolivo went down. Serie A needs a good contract with American TV.

De Rossi gets credit because you always love to bring him up and everyone respects your opinion.

So it's a combination of things it seems. Thanks for the answers.

I was even more surprised by the empty seats because the quality of play seemed pretty good.

I actually really like BeIN a lot more than when it was on Fox Soccer Channel. It's really a surprisingly cool channel as their talk shows and commentators for Serie A and La Liga tend to be enjoyably quirky characters and not just Ray Hudson.

They show a lot more Serie A matches than Fox did too. I was in Italy for some of this past season but every single one of 25 or so Roma matches when I was in NY was shown with at worst a delay to a later afternoon slot.

I would guess the bigger issue is that BeIN needs to get into more basic cable packages other than just those in large northern and western US metropolitan areas.

The problem may be that they also have BeIN Espanol and so a large percentage of people just wanting El Classico already have BeIN Espanol in their Spanish language packages.

Yeah, I don't have BeIN. I wish they all got the BPL contract.

Don't know if you're looking for a rooting interest in MLS, but Atlanta is getting a club in a couple of years. I know there are quite a lot of LSU fans who root for the Braves. That's who I'm reserving my MLS fandom for.

No. Man u is more like the yanks. Through the years people have man u stuff cus that's all they knew. Even if they know nothing if the sport. Just like people outside the states wearing Yankee hats. Man u was more accessible in the states than real when I was growing up. On TV more, and multiple clubs going with that name. I dont recall playing any clubs with the real moniker, plenty of united though.

I just find it hard to follow serie A. I guess it stems back to the match fixing prior to 06. Then I was pissed for a ling time after our game with those dirty fricks in the group stages in 06. Not to mention they boo black players. Its not really as accessible on TV, and Italians were more known for defense. I used to enjoy watching inter and they were my favorite club next to Arsenal. But just can't get into them anymore.

I'm no expert but I think the MLS has a salary cap in an effort to keep one team or a couple of teams from just continuously dominating. But IIRC each team has one exception from the cap that they can use to try to get a big name player. I may have e ven seen something about possibly raising this to two exceptions in the future. Just speaking from my admittedly imperfect understanding and memory though.

The quality of play is pretty equal across all the four bigger leagues regardless of the slight ebbs and flows of which is the "strongest" (though the styles of play do differ).

Most of it, of course, depends simply on which match you see:

Fiorentina v Napoli in Serie A or Wolfsburg v Dortmund in the Bundesliga will obviously have more quality on display than a matchup of 2 middling EPL sides just as Liverpool v Man City would.
