I've heard from a few outlets, including my English friends, that Southgate declined because he was not offered good terms regarding components like length of tenure, assurance, free control, etc). I have no way of knowing if there is any truth to this, of course. Supposedly he was offered essentially a "trial run" and he refused any offer that he deemed as constituting a lack of faith and commitment.
