Like when Everton tried to bring Landon in every year for about five years?

What resale value? If he goes back to the MLS, he's never going to get bought by another English club, and his probable MLS salary will price out everywhere else.

Exactly add to the fact you have to negotiate with the MLS and not the club seems to be pissing lots of European clubs off bc the MLS tries to sell way above market value.

You really don't see a difference between Donovan and Jozy?

Comparing LD to Jozy is absurd

LD was the face of the MLS and never wanted anything more than a loan deal.

That and the price tag the MLS put on him no one was going to pay.

I thought the running narrative is that Donovan wasn't good enough for Europe - just like Jozy.

wtf are you talking about

he wasn't good enough for Bayern Munich and he left Leverkusen.

MLS and any European club who wanted him could never come to a reasonable transfer fee.

Jozy lit up the Dutch league but struggled in Spain and during both stints in England.

Hes not worth 4 or 5 million a year, just like Dempsey and Bradley are not worth 8 a year.

If the MLS pays him that much his re-sell value will be nothing b/c no European club will pay that for him going into his late 20's with those kind of wages.

I swear that some of you guys think only in FIFA 15 Career Mode transfer values.

Do you think the phones at the ticket office/business development office light up if a team signs Shane Long?

"Phil, get in touch with the temp agency - we should probably staff up before we announce that Peter Odemwingie signing."

You guys are right.... if it's this time next year, and Jozy does something next year like what BWP did this year - there's no way a European club would pay for a (barely) 26 year old, highly marketable American with European experience and no work permit issues.

Thanks for setting me straight - your insight is invaluable.

I think if Jozy comes back to MLS, he'll never return to Europe. He would be signing on as a DP on a long-term deal. MLS would own him and have no interest in selling him. He would be a brand in MLS, and they would only sell at an exorbitant price. MLS is known for setting high valuations on high-profile players to make it difficult for them to transfer away. The league would have a very strong interest in keeping a youngish US player who currently is the attacking face of the USMNT. No European club is going to pay through the nose for a player who has scored 2 goals in 70 Premier League appearances, no matter what his numbers are like in MLS. The odds of him returning to Europe would drop to next to nothing. And that's just the reality of the situation, in my opinion.

There are probably only three posters who disagree with this (Sheep, Dalosaqy, Lucky).

Y'all are making a big assumption that he's never going back to Europe if he comes back to MLS. If he does well it is very possible he could return to Europe. I see why some say he isn't good enough for a major European league, but I thought Holland was a pretty solid start for him. I would like to see what he could do in France. It would be nice if he was on a team that could creep above the bottom 5 in the table. Both teams he has been on have been shite. Poyet is a shite manager.

The MLS is going to give him a salary that will price him out of a move back to Europe.
