Just some quotes from the Guardian World Cup podcast to put this evening's events into perspective.

- "I would venture to say this is one of the best games I've ever watched."

- "The USA were astonishing. They're one of several teams in the tournament that have shown you don't need world class players to make a world class team."

- "They were just so impressive and I think there are quite a few teams that could learn a thing or two from them and the effort they put in. They left nothing on the field and England will be one of those teams (that can learn from the US). I think a lot of England players should be very embarrassed with what they have just seen from the US."

- "Tim Howard, tonight, with the performance of the World Cup so far from any position in the field."

- "One of the things that have impressed me about the US is how Klinsmann has put a fearlessness into them."

Just saying. If the English are giving us props you know you have something to be proud of.

not that klinsmann doesnt support this belief and instill it in players, but that's been the american way in the world of soccer for a long time before klinsmann and it will be for a long time after he is gone.

Bob ball was the antithesis of fearlessness. It was the embodiment of fear, if we're being honest.

Very cool seeing that. I haven't watched much soccer in the past except for previous World Cups, Gold Cup, Enlgish Premier League, etc but this team is so easy to root for and attach yourself to.

I hate to say it, but the only thing "impressive" about the US tonight was the keeper.

Um, okay? The backline was abused probably for almost 80 minutes. The Belgians just couldn't finish. Tim made some fantastic saves, but many of them were right to him. Tim got the spotlight, and he deserved it, but his defense put him in bad spots all game.

I do respect the fight the US had in them, but I wouldn't go so far to say that the whole team looked "impressive".

I don't think anyone thinks the entire team looked impressive. Anyone who watched knows we could have lost that match 4-0. But if you watched you also saw that we shoulda coulda woulda won it dramatically in stoppage time.

Based on our play as a whole, the fact that we were right there until the very end is what impresses everyone so much.

We were almost able to do as much and even more with less. Some teams have more and did less.

That's the qualities of this team that people from all over are speaking to I believe.
