I'm not convinced that Germany and Netherlands took the second half of those games seriously.

Those guys are at the end of their seasons, have a couple of shite Euro qualifiers (Latvia, Gibraltar) and then they're off to the beach for a month.

That's not AT ALL taking away from what we did in either game. Our boys gave the effort required and executed flawlessly. You can't ask for more, and it's important FOR US to be able to do that more often.

But I do think that it's telling that the second half of these games were pretty different from the first halves.

Agree. Lots of high quality players for Germany that are certainly trying to win (score) but clearly not "digging in" 100% on defense in terms of pressure and harder tackles.
Their RB lazily wandering around the middle of the pitch hoping for a counter when Diskeruud strolled by is a good example.

However, it's still a huge positive in that unlike, say, the match with Italy in Genoa where the US got a goal against the run of play and defended against a one way assault for the next hour, the team really took it to Germany and looked very good in their passing and attacking patterns.

Also fantastic to see Bradley playing like he did at Chievo and, slightly lax pressing defense or not, continually dribbling guys like he was Marco Verratti on the edge of the area to burst out into space.

No reason to brag about it as if a WC knockout match but certainly one to feel extremely positive about going into the Gold Cup.

I understand that frustration and totally agree. I'm not one of those people though. Of course I always hope we win but I also understand the results of these games means next to nothing.

Yeah, friendlies are kind of strange no matter the result. It's always hard to gauge the kind of squad each team is going to send in, but it looked like in this one, Germany took it seriously at least.

Still a big win though regardless for the Americans.

I'm ONLY looking at our individual player performances and (to a lesser extent) team cohesiveness, passing, defensive awareness, etc.

Then how can you say anything but superlatives for the 1st goal we scored against Germany? Or the passing and movement on the second?

And I disagree that the Germans weren't motivated. It was obvious that Podolski couldn't give a shite, but most everyone else except Ozil (who had a point to prove playing in the middle) was playing for their national team life. It seems paradoxical to point out that a team full of German B teamers would be content to play half arse just because they know they are B teamers. All of them want to be a part of the first team. They have to play well and show effort at the very minimum. So they have no incentive to do anything other than try to play well. Could they be tired? Of course, but I can't buy the motivation angle especially when there were players who wanted to make a statement.

The only thing I noticed was the lack of hard tackles, but again, given what we know, it would be hard pressed to believe that any German player would be less motivated. I can buy that they might be tired though, but even German B teamers are better individual players than anyone the US has, for the most part.

No hard tackles, almost no going down easily/embellishing fouls etc... Nobody is saying everyone is just out there half assing it but it's a totally different level of intensity from a real game.

I'm not denying that, but the patterns of play were extremely promising. If anything the lack of intensity lead to a surprisingly open game, especially considering our last meeting.

And the 30 pass move we had was maybe the most impressive thing we've done in terms of the possession game against a decent opponent since the 2nd goal against Mexico in the 2011 GC. That's exactly the type of goal that we were promised when Klinsmann took over, and it was wonderful to behold.

GTFO.
We looked worse last night against Mexico than we have in 15 years.
Time for him to leave.

I posted this in the bobby wood thread but it more pertains to JK's thought process. Should we address the fact that Wood wasn't part of the squad until Bedoya got sick and was then somehow our first choice off the bench though? Don't get me wrong the sub worked but how do you from not included to that?
