Donovan basically left the national team for a while earlier this year and, in his place, other players have stepped in and play well. Now he's basically playing to get back in the good graces of Klinsmann. He'll likely end up back on the main roster for the World Cup and could even start.

The Gold Cup the year before the World Cup gets B squads. The Gold the year after the World Cup gets A squads.

The winner of the 2011 Gold Cup qualified for this year's Confederations Cup so that's why we sent the A squad. The 2013 Gold Cup winner advances to a Confederations Cup playoff game with the winner of the 2015 Gold Cup.. so not winning this one isn't that big of a deal since you still have a chance to qualify for the Confederations Cup in 2015.. And also you need to give your guys some rest during WC qualifying.

It would be big for the US to win both the 2013 and 2015 Gold Cup and auto-qualify for the Confederations Cup. There won't be a playoff if the same team wins both. And we're in a great position to take care of 2013 this month.

that would be fricking sweet if you had to take an entirely different roster every 2 years and if you won both gold cups then those rosters had to play each other to see who went to the confed cup.

oh, wait that makes no sense? my bad.
