i understand that it really sucks that we arent gonna be able to cheer on team USA in the world cup, but i dont see it as a HUGE setback to our future chances. you're talking about 3 games (we werent gonna get out of the group with this team).

sure international experience on that stage is important, but actual development happens far away from the international stage. i dont see future generations deciding not to play because this team didn't make the world cup, if you play soccer its because you love the game not because of the world cup.

honestly i didnt have much hope for this team after how rough qualification was going, i hope the losses lead us to make serious changes and who knows maybe even be better for us in the long run. the media needs to quit with their "this is gonna set back soccer in the United States a decade" bullshite

The one thing that would help the USMNT long term would be a Title IX waiver for NCAA men's soccer.

i disagree. college soccer is terrible for our national team. academies from 15-19 where players play for 10 months will always be better than a 3 month college season and then players should be looking to go pro or ending their career to go to school

Missing this 2018 World Cup is a lot less devastating than missing the 1998 World Cup would have been. Qualifying for 1998 helped keep interest from fading away after we hosted in 1994. Missing 1998 would have killed MLS in its infancy and set us back even further.

That being said, it still sucks. Soccer is now an established commodity in this country, with multiple generations of fans, unlike in 1998. This means we can recover from this embarrassment much quicker. This sucks in the short-term, but I truly believe this failure could be the kick in the arse that breeds long-term success, if, and only if, the right people are put in charge and we make the right changes to US Soccer in the coming years. Let's learn from this failure and embrace the changes that have to happen.

College soccer should just drop four years in age and go pro.

the point is there is no room for college soccer to be feeding our national team in any way.

18 year olds should already be professionals if they are going to be good enough to make the national team. sending anyone that has national team potential to college is basically killing their development for 4 years

College Soccer can be an amazing gateway to both the MLS and our National Team.

You'd need the NCAA to, at the very least, go to an 8 month season. Expand to all major universities and pump funding into the sport. Similar to how it's used as a minor league for the NBA, NFL and to a point, MLB.

If you are good enough to play on the international level you should have offers to play professionally. Why would you play in college?

I think the benefit would be to encourage continued participation at youth levels. Would give families a much more attainable end goal To justify expenses

Not everyone is ready to play professionally at 18. Some guys take an extra few years to develop. We don't want our top guys going to college, but college soccer shouldn't be shut down.

I agree you don’t want to shut it down. Similarly to baseball elite talent never makes it college but plenty of talent comes out of the college ranks.

It's not going to hurt our chances in the next cycle but it put the sport back a decade in the United States.

I have a few friends who don't really care that much for soccer but we're starting to get hooked on the whole watching USA play thing, that are now like haha that's why no one likes soccer.

The timing was everything in this.

College soccer is awful

While these kids are in college their counterparts overseas are full time professionals. College teams would get smashed but youth teams from Europe.

It is. But we aren't going to change the system overnight. Better coaching, a longer season, pairings with club teams and more funding can all help college soccer.

The college set up isn’t enough time to help later bloomers on a large scale

Do some guys bloom late around 21 after a couple years in college and then go to MLS and overseas, of course but we hurt the rest of the guys who can be developed with them having limited practice and school.

Some players don't develop as quickly. Not every USMNT player is going to be a professional at 17. Clint Dempsey is a great example.

This is a very ignorant statement, the best athletes in every other sport thrive in the NCAA because that is where the training and money are. There is also built in fan support which is probably one of the most important things.

Simply wanting to do what everyone else does will never work here as there are so many more popular sports and leagues for soccer to compete with, the only folks these academies are going yo end up with is more spoiled rich kids with questionable athletic ability.

Go to any academy and let us know how many hungry looking athletes are around, now contrast that with the youth leagues of the big 3.

That is the problem with US soccer and adding a few more classes for Biff and Ken is not going to fix the problem.

In college you still have restrictions on practice and a short arse season

So no, lifting title nine won’t fix shite.

College Soccer scholarships would get more kids chasing Soccer dream

Ultimately it won't be the source for top level talent.

It will get more kids pursuing soccer longer
