On this day in 2002, Mexico was forever knocked down a peg, by dos a cero.

It's in Spanish but you don't have to know any of it to see the tears of unfathomable sadness we unloaded on them that day..... glorious. I could watch this over and over again.

One of the best stories from that game was that as the teams were leaving the stadium apparently the buses ended up sitting next to each other at a red light. The Americans went nuts partying and waving while the mexicans tried to hide their sad faces haha

What a fantastic early morning that was. I remember my dad waking me up just long enough to watch the game. I think it was the summer before my freshman year in high school. I think I just slept on the couch in our living room that whole month.

Oh man, I loved the 2002 WC. Me and a group of international students stayed up almost every night to watch almost every match. There were some truly great moments. Who can forget Robbie Keene scoring at the death against Germany to secure Ireland's place in round of 16. Or Pappa Bouba Diop's lone goal in the Cup's opening match. To upset France!
EDIT: More memories incoming... Costa Rica vs Brazil in group play. Paulo Wanchope scoring an equalizer, picking up the ball, running and handing it to Ronaldo (the real Ronaldo), in a gesture saying "game fricking on." They lost, but still...

Everyone was so hyped for that England-Argentina match. Beckham's chance at redemption. I believe he scored a penalty, the only goal of the match, to win it. I remember being disappointed in Argentina that year.
Can't ever go wrong with breakfast burritos!

One of my coworkers, for whatever reason, was talking so much shite leading up to that match. He kept spouting all this bullshite about how Luis Figo was going to win the golden boot, and how US was sunk before the match even began. I was so happy to go in to work later that day. That motherfricker.

I think France had the second best squad next Brazil in 2002 and just BLEW the whole thing. Zidane, the best player in the world was injured coming in (and forced to play in their last game staring elimination in the face) and Henry hit a weird funk the whole time. The remaning squad was a mash of the players that had won it all in 98 and would push Italy to penalties in 2006.
A top team with outstanding players... that didn't make a damn thing happen and it was glorious to watch the frustration.

Was watching the game in an apartment in Natchitoches and we ended up getting the cops called on us after the second goal because we were cheering so loud. Awesome game.
