In the next week, MLS is expected to announce an $8.8 million increase in Targeted Allocation Money over what had been previously earmarked for 2017. That’s an increase of $400,000 per team to $1.2 million per team of TAM for next season.

How substantial is this? I know there is a salary cap of some kind essentially, but I'm unfamiliar in how large of an increase this is.

It's a big help in the sense that teams can add to the depth of their team. Essentially, with TAM increasing 800k this year, clubs could add, say 2 new players in the 800k range, buy down their "cap hit" with the TAM money to only 400k a piece. MLS cap is very complex, but that's my simple understanding of it.

This is a good thing. It is another step in the investment of experienced players and allows the quality of the player pool to deepen.

So are they basically able to "buy down" the cap hit of contracts? And this increases the amount they can buy down?

Cool, thanks

Has anyone looked at the growth of MLS franchise values over the last 10ish years? It's pretty impressive.

The outcome is great! Why they don't just change the cap and DP salary mark instead of making it harder for all to understand. I have no idea.
