Your team sucking and having terrible gate revenue isn’t a negative consequence?

Not when your get rewarded with a high draft pick and guaranteed revenue that is shared from the league that comes from other teams and franchise fees.

No real huge losses like when getting relegated

If MLS had a European model of sports like the NASL did it 100% would have gone under in the early 2000s.

This talking point is so played out bc it’s false

Comparing the NASL and the 70s owners to the MLS caliber owners is dumb

Especially once Hunt stoped owning most the league

It will be interesting once the franchise fees stop flowing in for the teams that don’t pull their weight

Especially bc the tv deal doesn’t generate much money

I thought your opinion was that college soccer was garbage. Are you saying a high draft pick actually provides a tangible benefit? Also these teams make a lot of money from their gate revenue. That’s a massive loss if your team sucks.

Agreed. I think pro rel eventually happens here but I think it takes another twenty years.

How is it false? Teams with deeper pockets could outspend the others. It was the downfall of NASL and I don’t see how it couldn’t plausibly happen again.

The US never had the luxury of a grassroots development of the game prior to the influx of money into the sport. Early European/South American leagues without paid professionals could easily institute pro rel in a brand new league because there was no money involved. Now that professional sports teams are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, how do you get investors to buy into a franchise in a young league if there’s the chance your investment immediately drops down a tier and completely tanks its value?

MLS almost went under?

Absolutely. They were down to 8 teams at one point after several folded. Landon Donovan and Brian McBride mentioned on a recent episode of an Everton podcast that many insiders think the league might have gone under had we not had the showing we did in 2002, which really revitalized interest in the sport.

I think Lamar Hunt owned 3 teams from 2003-2006.

AEG has owned 8 different teams.

It is garbage but sometimes a Jack Harrison is there, dude was a top player as a rookie

Correct but those loses are offset by the revenue that is shared. Most MLS teams don’t make a profit. That revenue trickled down helps get the back to breaking even

It will make the league much more competitive bc every match counts

Better quality owners now than 50 years ago

Much better ways to market the game and additional revenue streams

The issue is the league is improving in basically one area of the field and that’s attacking players

It makes sense invest your DPs in exciting guys who can score goals and get people to watch

Bad part is no real money is being invested in defenders. Defending in the league has been pretty stagnant for years.

Point taken but like you said it’s relatively rare. Also Jack went to an expansion team anyway. I don’t think a college prospect is a great reward for sucking arse. Most first rounders are struggling to make the bench at this point.

I don’t doubt it. But I’m curious what your proposition is for making it viable ASAP.

Defenders don’t put butts in seats
Chicharito, Vela, etc do.
Ideally MLS will become a springboard league like the Dutch league for players to make the jump to a bigger league. Shitty defending hasn’t really hurt the Eredivisie. Plus more goals is fun for spectators. Basically I don’t really disagree with the offense first mentality for a second tier league.

It gives the illusion the league is crazy improving when it isn’t

It’s very entertaining

But seeing these dudes and even old attackers torch low level defending isn’t helping the image of the league to the masses of fans who are not that niche MLS fan base but still knows and follows other leagues.

If owners had the freedom to operate independently and spend what they see fit we would be able to see those quality players in the defense part of the game.

I think you’re applying of projecting your knowledge of the game on the casual fan. Most casual fans don’t know the game as well as you do. People want to see goals. John smith is probably not putting on an LAFC game, watching them tear it up, and then turning it off at 3-1 complaining that the defending is shite.

Zlaten interviews during this tournament while it's the only sport being played in the US would be gold.

He would have been a great personality for the league to have if he was younger and stuck around longer. That's the kind of players they need to appeal to casual fans in the US.

OCSC better finish top 3 in Group A. We play Ft. Lauderdale, NYCFC, and Nashville. They set us up with the two expansions and NYCFC. Should be 7 points minimum.
