Considering I don't closely follow European player contracts, do European Clubs routinely over pay for older players as a thank you for the years?

At Manchester United I think the policy is to only give 1 year contracts to players older than 30. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only exception was Giggs.

I know for Arsenal, they don't give multi-year contracts to players over 30. Bacary Sagna is one of the top 3 players on the team, but they won't be re-signing him this offseason because of that policy and his warranted request for a multi-year deal.

And he was being paid as a player coach.

I like Kobe, he's one of my favorite players but I agree with Jurgy on this one. Kobe puts asses in the seats but he's taking up a ridiculous amount of cap room that will make it impossible for the Lakers to win with him on the team.

No they ditch your arse with the quickness and players usually do a few things. Either go to MLS or the A-league to get paid more than they would in Europe and still be a top player in that league or they sign for their first club who they came through the youth ranks with and first got first team football with.

Also a few English players or EPL players went to Scotland to restart their careers.

It seems like due to all of the different leagues an older player could leave a top flight EPL team and go to little lesser of a league continue their career and make more money.

The player pool seems to be deeper thus teams are less interested in paying older players, when there are many many younger players willing and able to take the place of guy who is over the hill.

A world clasd player knows what he speaks of.

We can get out of the group, we can win a couple of more if we draw the right match ups.

We might get fortunate and win a semi final with the right opponent.

But if Brazil or Argentina is our opponent in the Final we will get beat.

Making the semis as we nearly did in 2002 would be a minor miracle un its self.

J.K. in my opinion, because we are in a hard group, is just trying to take the pressure off his group so the won't play nervous to start games like they did in 2010.

I trust J.K.

Wilson basically got mad bc klinsman criticized the Kobe Bryant contract . Which is retarded bc almost every American sports fan with common sense also thought it was a stupid contract, including a lot of Wilbons ESPN colleagues. But bc klinsman is German his opinions are invalid.

'MERICA doesn't concede to anyone!!!! DERP!

Wilbon is just a paid talking head in the same vein or O'Reilly or Rush or Maddow. I don't listen to what anyone of them have to say.

Posted this in the other thread yesterday

quote:

Regarding his point about Jurgen saying we are not capable of winning the World Cup - We are not, plain and simple. Unless something really crazy happens, we just don't have the players to do it.

The mindsets of American sports fans and Europeans seem to be different regarding the acceptance of success or failure in a league/tournament. The European mindset seems to be a more realistic one, meaning that a coach or fan is more willing to say things like Jurgen said. Americans are more stubborn about such things, never wanting to admit we don't have a chance before something has started.

The massive gap in talent and money that exists on clubs/national teams across Europe vs the American style of salary cap leagues which create more parity is probably the reason for this dichotomy.

It's absurd. Look at quotes from at least 4 or 5 nba teams from before the season. They may couch it in phrases like "rebuilding mode" but the management and coaching staffs of those teams basically admit there's no way their winning an nba title

True. Kind of. But coaches and execs for an NBA team are far less likely to come out and say they are tanking a season and will usually skirt around the subject or deny it entirely.

It's pretty common you'll see a European manager come out and "concede the title" or something similar, well before his team is out of the conversation . It always kinda struck me as funny and different from the American sports I grew up watching.

Does Wilbon ever defend Kobe other than saying "I know Kobe" ?

He's mad, because JK was RIGHT, and he dissed one of his 'boys'.
