I could not care less about what Wilshere does on his own time. And if he played like Zidane even the biggest Arsenal supporters would not care less whether he smoked a pack a day. But, right or wrong, I can understand that some people will look at his form and blame a perceived lifestyle as a reason for underperformance in comparison to expected potential.

Of course they will and they prbly would do it even if he has been playing better (like Manziel last year in college after all the summer partying reports) or if the photos hadn't come out, they would have prbly made up some reason he was playing poorly like Anderson for united that I've heard everything from partying, to not caring about the sport, to riding his motorcycle too much or some other foolishness
In other words, Haters are going to hate and alligators are going to alligate

Zidane, Coentrao, Balotelli, Socrates, Barthez, and Prosinecki are or were all well-known smokers. Not a bad list. Does that empirical evidence work for you or would you just prefer to continue gasbagging?
Great list. Still doesn't mean it doesn't affect their performance.
And I'm not talking about the occasional smoke. I don't know how much they smoke nor do I really care. But to say that an athlete's smoking regularly wouldn't affect their fitness or performance is just stupid.
ETA: to further clarify I'm not blaming his form on smoking. Just saying as a professional athlete you should strive to keep yourself in top physical condition and regularly smoking would not do that
