It's amazing how many people still don't get it...even "real" soccer fans.

The small sliver of success that the USMNT has had (if you could call it success), has been due to the fact that we have out-athleted and out-hustled the opposing side. This used to be a talking point by commentators but it seems that died with the 2010 WC squad or somewhere around there.

Do people really think countries like Spain have had such success because they have "superior athletes"? I agree pay for play needs to stop and we need to get in inner cities and increase player pool but until development, coaching, and the availability of those things to everyone who wants it improves, I'm not sure it matters.

You barking up the wrong tree baw. We've been saying that development and coaching has to improve since this board was founded.

I know but this isn't really directed at anyone on this particular board. Sorry if it seemed otherwise.

I also kinda forgot how the USMNT was historically described as "great athletes, lots of heart, not very good at soccer". Now it's more like "poor athletes, no heart, not very good at soccer". But I still think we have great athletes, the second two...not so much.

I would definitely call what we had success.

We advanced out of a "group of death", defeating our nemesis Ghana and out ranking Portugal last WC to lose to Belgium in ET.

You are right, though. We used to play with "heart" and had a "want" (to borrow a term from Les) to win matches and defeat superior opponents. That is what was so endearing about the USMNT for the past two decades.
We were like the real life Mighty Ducks.
Then, we got too established and complacent.
And, this is the result.
No fricking World Cup.

The public at large probably agrees with the athletic argument, but it is such a stupid one to make.

It's like people don't realize that even if you get the athlete with the technique, he's more likely to end up like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain than he is Thierry Henry.

Yup.

And the thing is the U.S. is on the verge of its best technical generation with guys like Pulisic, McKinnie, etc. If they would've just gotten through this cycle without completely screwing it up.

Let's see if the young guys play with heart.

Yep.

I think JK really screwed us up in that he was trying to force a square peg in a round hole. Aside from playing everyone out of position, etc, he tried to force a style that just wasn't right. We didn't/don't have the technical ability to win that way. Boom ball was/is ugly but it kinda worked for us. I'm not saying it should be the goal going forward but you have to play to your strengths.
