Yeah if I moved to Canada or Panama, no way I'm becoming a fan of their national team. If someone said "root for the country you live in" I'd tell them to frick off.

That'll ruffle some feathers #onhere, but it makes a ton of TV sense

This. I might just become a (part-time) fan if they make some noise in the WC.

It used to really piss me off seeing people live off the bounty of this country and not root for the USMNT, eschewing them instead for the team repping their country of birth or ancestral origin.

There are TONS of 1st and 2nd generation Europeans who cheer as vociferously for their "old" country as they do for USA....... Of course some of that is the byproduct of the level of play.

I don't condone Mexico's players' or fans' actions but, I do think having a heated rivalry increases my enjoyment of US soccer. Wins at Azteca mean more to me than elsewhere. Every batman needs his joker. Imagine the rating and publicity if US and Mexico somehow ending up playing a knockout match in the WC. The rivalry helps grow the sport.

I've only ever been to one USA vs. MEX match. 2004 in Houston. The atmosphere was electric, and even though the result was a 0-0 draw, Tim Howard saved our bacon on numerous occasions. His performance in that match just might have been what caused Alex Ferguson to sign him to a contract at Manchester United shortly afterwards.
