Mrs. Sheep and I will be celebrating a milestone in 2020 (13 years syphilis-free, if you're curious).

We talked about places we could go, and I said "hey, where's the European tournament at in 2020?" She reminded me that it was a trip for both of us, I implored her to look anyway.

For the uninitiated, here's the way the 2020 tournament is laid out:

quote:

Final and semi-finals: London (England)

Quarter-finals and group stage: Munich (Germany), Baku (Azerbaijan), Saint Petersburg (Russia), Rome (Italy)

Round of 16 and group stage: Copenhagen (Denmark), Bucharest (Romania), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Dublin (Republic of Ireland), Bilbao (Spain), Budapest (Hungary), Grimbergen (Belgium), Glasgow (Scotland)

Here's a few assumptions:

- We might be traveling with little(s) Sheep(s). Probably not, but who knows. If there's just the current Sheepette, Jr, than maybe. More than one, maybe not.
- Traveling for 10-14 days.
- We'll have the resources to enjoy ourselves, but I'm cheap(ish.) If staying somewhere a week after a game is half the price, I'd rather do that.
- At most, we would ATTEND one game (probably none, if little(s) are in tow, but would probably pub/fan zone watch a bunch of matches.

So - what would you do?

Stay near one of the host cities, but not in?

Visit somewhere that isn't hosting? (Paris or Prague or Barcelona or Madrid or Milan, for example).

Do the London/Glasgow/Dublin or Amsterdam/Brussels/Copenhagen, but not on match days?

I think being on the continent during the tournament would be a blast - even if we didn't attend a match.

Without knowing who plays where, just based on the cities I would do:

Round of 16 - Budapest
Quarter Finals - Munich

Rome is neat, but outside the coliseum it's just kind of your typical big dirty city. Italy has much cooler places to visit in my opinion. I'm a big fan of Munich and most of Germany.

ETA: Haven't been, but Copenhagen is supposed to be neat. And I would avoid anywhere in Belgium right now

I kind of want to go to Azerbaijan. The matches should be cheaper and easier to get into and when would I ever go to Azerbaijan for some other reason?

I'm debating this trip as well. It would probably be great even if you don't stick to the host sites.

Thankfully (or not), this is four years from now. Who the hell knows?

Copenhagen/Stockholm/Oslo seems like it would be a fun time.

If it were me (and I don't have kids or a wife sooo yeah):

Round of 16: Copenhagen
Quarters: Munich

Then London of course

I would love to attend matches - but I don't think more than one is in the cards.

I do like the idea of Copenhagen, though.

I'll be curious to see how security goes this time around, as well.

You're right about having fun just being there if you can't get to a match. My wife and I were in Paris the night of the Italy-France final in 2006. We ended up in a bar with a bunch of Italians on vacation for most of the 2nd half / OT / PKs. I wish I had recorded some of the words they called Zidane.

There are a lot less Europeans travelling in June than in July, so if you're there for the early stages it might be cheaper and the tourist stuff will be less crowded.

Copenhagen is great, but it's expensive. I would hit Amsterdam then Munich for matches, with a nice selection of smaller German towns in between. Major airports, reasonably priced, fantastic parks and gardens, centrally located, and you can hit places like this in between:

Then potentially hop down on a day frip from Munich to check out Innsbruck.
