I know the rules and what is going on in soccer, I just am not a hardcore/frequent watcher. How common does this happen? What would it be similar to in other sports?

not very often.

similarity I guess would be in hockey when a powerplay happens and the team with a man down scores?

I am not very well versed in soccer. If a red card is given early in the match does the team play man down the whole game? Or until the half? How does that work exactly?

Red card = cannot be replaced.

If you get red carded 3 minutes in, like the US defender Michael Orozco's dumb arse did in the '08 Olympics, your team plays 10 on 11 for 87 minutes.

ETA: And you are almost always NOT eligible for your team's next game.

Far less common than a short-handed goal in hockey.

Pitcher hitting a home run?

It's really tough to make cross-sport comparisons for things that only happen in one sport.

I hereby retract my statement in the ref thread about Wolfgang Stark being a good ref.

It's very common.

What usually happens is that a team is alright for about 10-15 minutes, but eventually, it becomes too much for the team to have to play against. After all, most teams end up removing a striker or midfielder, thus trying to play defense the whole damn time. The otehr team will eventually score because you have no offense to hold teh ball on the other side of the field.

He meant the team that is down a man scoring.

What was that semifinal game about a year ago where the guy made the shorthanded goal to send him team through to the finals? One of the few club matches I have ever seen but it was awesome.
