I volunteered to coach rec league this year, and it is 8v8.
I have 15 freaking kids to play in 8 positions.
50/50 talent vs inexperienced

First match we played I ran a 2-1-2-2, and there was SO MUCH SPACE on the field. We lost 4-0.

So, I switched it up. 3-3-1. Figured we would defend more than attack, and we would build. We got smoked 9-2 last night. The other team had much more talent, but we got rocked off the field. We had no attack (obviously) and our team was way out of position.

I am thinking outside the box on this one, but I truly feel that a 3-1-3 would work decently. We would have players at the attack and d, and our CM would support both. I have never read of this attempted anywhere, but figured I'd ask some other posters what y'all think.

FWIW, I have coached for five years and am a high school JV coach in Lower Alabama. I have never had to coach 8v8 though.

Not trying to be a dick, but have you googled it? I just did and there's numerous websites offering pluses and minuses of each formation based off your team's strengths and weaknesses.

Of course. I youtubed as well.

Just wondering if anyone had any first-hand experience with it. Or has ever seen a 3-1-3.

Ok, just checking. I've never coached so I have no advice.

If the talent gap is large (certainly sounds like it was for 9-2 game), it won't matter what formation you use.

How did they arrive at 8 players?
We do 4 then 7 then 9 then 11.

I have no experience coaching at that level, but my naive mind would think a 3-2-2 would give you the balance you need. Especially if your more talented players were midfielders. One solid middle defender, 2 solid mid-fielders, and at least 1 solid forward.

You're probably right, but there has got to be a way to mitigate it. And, the post was a shot in the dark hoping to either affirm or criticize my 3-1-3, which it appears I may throw out on Monday to see if it works.

I am coaching a 9v9 team with several weak players mixed in with several average players and several good players.
I am going to try a 4-2-2 and try to hide my weaker ones in the outside defender positions and keep my strength in the middle.
First game Sunday so we will see how it goes.

Last year, my son was u12, 9v9. They played a 2,4,2 and it worked well once the wings learned to stay wide.
