No it shows the MLS is keeping up with the paying well over market value for guys.

I don't really keep up with Juventus, but I know he was a decent player, who is somewhat in his prime, who was having trouble finding playing time for a pretty good side. Is it possible that other above average players could make the switch to maybe grow their brand and possibly become a big time player over here? It wouldn't surprise me, but the whole squad cap on big time players would have to change for that happen.

Hes a fringe first teamer at Juve. His downfall was being to loyal to Juve. He could start at a lot of mid table to lower end Italian teams but no one is going to pay that absurd amount he is making.

Unfortunately the standard has been set and its on of the reasons free agency is a hot topic in the MLS. The MLS has outgrown its structure. If the MLS wants to flood the league with over paying for average Euro players to improve the league. Then its current set up wont allow it

It's certainly a nice signing for Toronto and fans of the league in general.

However, I think it's more another small step in the right direction more than some momentous harbinger.

For example, Alessandro Diamante, another pretty high profile Italian fringe NT player signed in China 1 1/2 ago (even though he did come back this winter). A common denominator in both cases was a salary way out of line with what a European club would pay (though both also had some extenuating circumstances like Giovinco not really wanting to go a rival of Juve and Diamante having a Chinese wife).

I don't think it's "strong" message until players the calibre of Giovinco start choosing MLS for fairly equal salaries (the old NASL already had prime time stars playing in the USA for massive paydays). But, again, it is certainly a very nice coup to get Giovinco as he's a very entertaining player to watch.

The issue is it is creating a huge class gap b/w the players.

Thats why free agency is so important.

You have some MLS players making less than League Two wages while some are getting paid double their market value, whos wages are more than a lot of MLS clubs total wage bill.

Id rather the league grow with paying players who would be playing in the 2nd divisions of England, Germany, Italy and Spain just slightly over what they are worth, than getting a few guys each season paying them way over what they should be making.

Yeah I was totally unaware of the wage gap until I read a Deadspin (I hate to admit I read something on Gawker btw) about how the highest paid players can make north of $5 million and some guys in the locker room make $32K a year and their contracts aren't even guaranteed. It honestly sounds like a HUGE problem.

Here's a link to the article in case anyone is interested.

When MLS becomes relevant to the world, and produces elite players, are you going to stick to your foreign club or commit to an American side?

Why are you so hung up on "rooting for an American side"?

Football is a global sport. This is a global world. How shortsighted, immature, and infantile to think that because of where someone lives, they must "root for an American side."

I'm still having trouble picking an MLS team.

I really dont like Houston, even though they are the closest. Orlando would be a good option, but I cant get a connection with them.

I would like an mls team that I could see with some kind of regularity (at least via tv and an occasional visit) and the only team I do have some connection however weak, with is Montreal. But I dont see how Id be able to see them on tv or in person much of the time.

No, I would not stop supporting United when the mls gains more revelance and part of it is because I cant find a connection with a team.

(And I have been to old trafford and I have seen them in person)

I accept who we are.

Stadium is way outside the city. I only saw the city itself from a distance.

Just the way I like it.

Yea when i made my trip our hotel was about a mile and half walk from the ground.

But it really isn't way outside the city. Only about 2 half miles from the main train station

Split taxi from airport to the hotel and stayed around old trafford and just walked around that.

After that, honestly, i don't know, we followed the directions of a kid we could not understand, went the way he pointed and somehow, after a long walk, found our way to the right bus to the right station to get to london.

Met an English man who was friends with a lsu
tennis player (from 7 years ago).

I dont count tranport hubs as visiting a place though

We didnt spend money getting to and from the city proper and just stayed in the little suburb

Pretty sure most of us already have an MLS side.

Really? I'm not sure that's true...but I could be wrong. I tried to pick an MLS team to follow. At first, I was going to latch on to Portland when they entered the league. I liked the smaller stadium, the fans seemed passionate and the lumberjack is just cool. But it didn't happen. I thought about Houston, meh. I like to go to Walt Disney World....so maybe I'll be an Orlando City fan? Probably not.
