NEW YORK RED BULLS vs. ANTIGUA GFC
RED BULL ARENA, Harrison, N.J.
August 3, 2016 (CONCACAF Champions League)
8 pm ET (Facebook.com | UDN - tape delay)

Will the third time be the charm for the New York Red Bulls? Twice before, they have qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League -- and both times, most recently in the 2014-15 tournament, they failed to reach the knockout round, with only one victory in six CCL matches. Now, after winning the 2015 Supporters Shield, the Red Bulls look to get off to a good start in this year's group stage when they host Guatamalan side Antigua GFC on Wednesday at Red Bull Arena.

First time for several things
This will be the first Guatemalan opponent in CCL play for the Red Bulls, who are 1-0-1 against Central American opposition in the tournament. Their only victory in the modern-format CCL came in a 2-0 victory over Salvadoran side CD FAS in the 2014-15 group stage. Antigua -- nicknamed Los Panzas Verdes ("Green Bellies") for their kit color and in honor of the local avocado industry -- are making their first appearance in the tournament, after winning the 2015 Apertura in Guatemala's top flight.

Back in the USA
Antigua forward Brian Ramirez is no stranger to playing in America, having starred for Messiah College in Harrisburg, Pa., from 2011-14. He helped the Falcons win NCAA Division III titles in 2012 and 2013, then began his professional career in Sweden before returning to his native Guatemala.

Hey, that name sounds familiar
Fabian Castillo is on the Antigua roster. Yes, he's a forward from South America. No, it's not the FC Dallas star whose future is currently unclear. This Fabian Castillo is 28, from Argentina, and joined the Guatemalan side this summer from third-division Argentinean club Deportivo Patria.

DEPORTIVO SAPRISSA vs. PORTLAND TIMBERS
ESTADIO RICARDO SAPRISSA ÁYMA, San José, Costa Rica
Sept. 14, 2016 (CONCACAF Champions League)
10 pm ET (UDN, facebook.com)

The Portland Timbers face their first road test of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday, when they travel to Costa Rica to take on group leader – and Central American powerhouse – Deportivo Saprissa.

The Timbers are 1-0-0 in CCL play, while Saprissa come in with four points after two matches. Saprissa boast one of the more robust home field advantages on the continent, and Portland will have their work cut out for them to earn a result in San Jose.

A loss on Tuesday would put the Timbers four points off the Group B pace, but with a home game against Saprissa and a trip to face El Salvador’s Dragón to follow, the Timbers would still be able to claim the group by winning out. A win for Portland would vault them to first position in the group and give them the inside track to a top seed in the quarterfinals.

Into the Monster’s Cave
Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma, known colloquially as the “Monster’s Cave,” is one of the toughest places to play in all of CONCACAF. Timbers midfielder Ned Grabavoy knows all about the famed stadium, having played there in one of MLS’ best-ever nights in the CCL.

Grabavoy was with Real Salt Lake for their CONCACAF Champions League semifinal at Saprissa in 2011. RSL held a 2-0 lead heading into the away leg and lost 2-1 in Costa Rica but advanced to the final by winning the two-legged series 3-2 on aggregate.

“It’s an interesting little drive and hike up a hill where the fans are ready before the game,” Grabavoy told Timbers.com of the ride to the stadium. “Fans are ready around the stadium to let you know that it’s going to be a difficult night. I think from that moment we knew how difficult of a task it was going to be, but we embraced it a little bit.

“You got the locker rooms underneath the stands and it’s old concrete,” he continued. “Sometimes it feels like the place is going to fall down on you. All those things add into it a little bit: the stadium noise, the atmosphere, the tiny locker rooms, the fans right on top you letting you hear it before [the game] and at halftime.”

Timbers look for road reversal
Just in case a trip to Costa Rica wasn’t tough enough, the Timbers have been dreadful on the road this year. Portland are winless on the road in MLS play in 2016, posting an 0-8-6 record away from Providence Park.

The Timbers did go 1-1-0 on the road in their previous CCL run, losing 3-1 at Honduran club Olimpia and winning 4-1 at lowly Guyanese club Alpha United – who finished the CCL group stage 0-4-0 with a -16 goal differential – in the 2014-15 tournament.

Porter faces roster decisions
Timbers head coach Caleb Porter faces some tough roster choices for Wednesday’s match, which comes four days after Portland beat Real Salt Lake last weekend and three days before their crucial home test against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday (6 pm ET, MLS LIVE).

Porter used a mixture of reserves and first-teamers in Portland’s first CCL match, a 2-1 win against C.D. Dragon on Aug. 4. He needed his full complement of stars, with Best XI candidate Diego Valeri scoring in the 90th-minute to give Portland all three points.

That game, however, wasn’t on the road, nor was it in the midst of the late-season playoff battle the Timbers currently find themselves in. How Porter manages his roster as he balances his desire for the club’s first-ever CCL Knockout Round berth with the sixth-place Timbers’ drive to stay above the red line in the West could have major implications on both competitions.

Yes, unfortunately, Portland is fighting to get in the MLS playoffs and New York is sprinting for the Supporters Shield and home field playoff advantage. Those realities are probably viewed as more pressing. It will be interesting to see what lineups Porter and Marsch put on the pitch for the CCL matches.

Portland played a strong lineup with their usual starters, minus Adi, who came off the bench in the second half to help with the win. Adi and Nagbe with goals to wrap up a 2-1 win.

New York opened with a lineup largely of reserves, opting to rest key guys like Kljestan and Wright-Philips. Nonetheless they secured the needed result.

great win by portland last night

tonight we have...

FC DALLAS vs. CD SUCHITEPÉQUEZ
Frisco, Texas
8 pm ET (facebook.com)

No matter what happens this week, the Group H winner in this year's CONCACAF Champions League won't be decided until Oct. 20.

Going into Wednesday night's matchup at Toyota Stadium, FC Dallas and Guatemala's CD Suchitepéquez have four points from two matches each in CCL play -- all against eliminated Salvadoran side Real Estelí, who have already played all four of their fixtures.

The winner of this game will hold control of the group heading into the finale at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City, but would still need to secure a draw in that match to guarantee a spot in the quarterfinals. A draw on Wednesday would keep things level after three matches -- but, depending on the scoreline, could play a big part in the away-goals tiebreaker if both matches end deadlocked.

Can FCD keep all the balls in the air?

It's already been a dream season for FC Dallas, who already are the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champions and lead the Supporters' Shield standings with a legitimate shot at the league's first domestic treble (Open Cup/Shield/MLS Cup). Landing a spot in next year's quarterfinals would be another feather in the club's collective cap -- but can they afford to risk key players in CCL with the end of the regular season and the start of the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs looming?

Manager Oscar Pareja has already show himself willing to commit his roster across all competitions, mixing first-choice players into both of his lineups so far in CCL play. Then again, FC Dallas have a key Western Conference matchup with the third-place LA Galaxy this weekend, and they're trying to break a three-match run without a victory in league play. If Pareja wanted to work in more backups for this match -- then go starter-heavy in October, if need be -- it would be hard to fault him.

Meet the Visitors

Suchitepéquez got into this year's group stage by winning Guatemala's 2016 Clausura Championship, qualifying them for their first CCL under the tournament's current format. They took fourth place in 1993 in the old CONCACAF Cup Winner's cup and reached that tournament's Central Zone qualifying stage in 1995.

Homefield Advantage

FC Dallas have never lost at home to a Central American opponent in CCL play, with a 2-0-1 record between the 2011-12 tournament and this edition. That includes a 2-1 victory over Real Estelí on Aug. 24, in Dallas' group opener.

Then again, it's been hard for any team to come away from Toyota Stadium with a win this year. In 19 matches at home across all competitions this season, counting one Open Cup match played in Dallas, FC Dallas have lost just once.

Suchitepéquez have never faced an MLS opponent -- at home or away -- in CONCACAF play, making their last appearance in the Cup Winner's Cup the year before MLS was founded in 1996.
