Ok so we're in agreement now? You mentioned the scissor, IMO its kind of moot because at that point he's already deserving of a red for leaving the ground.

If he cleared the ground, then absolutely. A two-footed launch is always a red. I rewatched the gif and saw that his right leg was off of the ground. I'm definitely changing my opinion if that's the case.

That's why I mentioned the scissor. When I first saw it, it looked like he was sliding with his leading foot, not airborn.

So a rational fan with no hatred for Man U agrees it was a red and absolutely crazy that it didn't get a yellow? Good. Now we got the level headed and the crazies agreeing.

Also, is the two-footed challenge always a straight red? Is that defined in the Laws of the Game, or is it just an unwritten rule among referees? Are red card offenses fully dependent on the referee?
Anyone know? I couldn't find it in the Laws PDF on my computer, but it was through Adobe Reader's unreliable search function.

I don't believe it's in FIFAs rules, but in the EPL, the referees are instructed to show straight red for 2 footed challenges. I'm not sure how it is handled in other european leagues.

Yeah. Look at Hangeland's tackle from last week. Should only have been a yellow in my opinion. He didn't go in hard, was probably trying to protect himself, and the other player got right up.

Yes, great example. I agree that it seemed harsh to show Hangeland straight red. At the end of the day, the rule makes the game safer, so I can accept it.

Dependent on the ref/league. The written rules of the game are unsurprisingly broad on purpose in order to lend subjectivity to the decision.

Hell, Torres was sent off against Swansea after scoring two early goals for this. Drogba was also sent off for it last year and he won the ball and didn't touch the player. I've seen numerous guys sent off whether they win the ball or not.
